I hav 4.56 gears and 35s but had this problem on the way back from the shop with just 31s..i seemed to hav no a$$..granted i didnt get on it too much kuz im still breakin it in..but did not notice much difference let alone the amoutn i would hav expected..i was having a bad! torque problem, and gettin 10mpg..so i went for the gears first since they were most expensive and would need to be done anyway.. but while lightly wheeling with these gears, i was gettin up to 2 grand befor i was even gettin the tires to spin.. what am i lookin at? .. for quite some time i hav been thinkn about a possible torque converter..

side not- A4LD has 10k on it, bought the exploder with 0 miles on that rebuild (do not kno if torque converter is original)

p.s. im at school so i dont hav time for this unfortunately..but i have fuel system treatment, a fuel filter, and plugs/wires that will be goin in it as soon as i get a decent break to go home. (i do know these will do wuite a bit for me but please brainstorm outside that anyway)

Are you saying the engine need to reve to 2,000 RPMs just get the vehicle moving? In other words, on flat ground, it wont creep when you put it in [D]rive?

I'm confused

i was doin light wheelin..on an incline..and in some mud..to get the tires to react i needed to get up to a pretty high rpm..2kish

Thats what 4LO is for :D .. but if you're having problems moving in 4LO, then theres someting definitely wrong

yeah, and in 4lo you will be higher than 2k rpms

does your truck react the same way in 2wd?

o no i was in 2wd..my apoligies..yeah this was just climbin a small hill starting at the bottom..n i didnt move.. yeah no my 4wd isnt even locking right now.. that was 2wd and it was the same from 1-(D)

so when you put it in D does the engine start to pull down, or does it continue to free rev like you never put it in gear?

It sounds to me like someone changed the transmission filter and used a 2-wheel drive version instead of the 4x4 version. I could be wrong, but it sure does sound like the transmission is slipping when you are pointing up hill, which means that you're not getting oil into your transmission pickup.

I've purchased 3 filter kits of late for the A4LD - 4x4 and each one had to be sent back, as it was a 2-WD filter!

If it doesn't have the extended pickup tube, it is the wrong filter.

glfrederick I would be totally impressed if you are correct. I don't know that I even understand what his problem is yet...

Just something I've seen way too often...

I won't know until he comes back and says so, but it would be the first place I started looking with his described symtoms.

well that would be interesting..i woudl hav crtainly not thought of that.. how could i tell if its incorrect adn make sure i purchase the correct one? but no i do not slip..the trans is very solid..as i said only 10k on it..and no it does not free rev..it drives ok but i would've expected to have more ass with such big gears.. o and yes it does torque down i just feel like i hav to giv it higher rpm then expected to get the tires to do anything..i thought i would hav a much better crawl ratio but instead im giving it a lotta throttle to do minimal things

btw glfred this is a new name for me and im now elite.. i was "exporeranger" but i couldnt stand the typo so i got a new name and i obviously decided to go with the 4.56 due to mostly your insight..thanks again for that..

and hopefuly we can figure this one out too

the 4x4 version has an extension on the bottom that dips into the sump on the tranny pan. even with 4.56 gears you are running a very tall tire your effective ratios are like this...

35"tires W/ 4.56gears = 30"(stock) w/ 3.90 gears

your not even into the 4.10 range, which is what I have stock, and I don't consider my truck to have creeper gears even with the 5r55e tranny.

The only way your going to get creeper is to use your t-case lo range. Since you have a 92 I would consider putting the manual hub conversion on it and use the t-case more. I did that on a 90 Ex sport, put in a set of manual hubs on and I could keep them unlocked but still use the creeper gear on dry pavement. It worked really good since that truck also had a manual 5spd. Just another option to think about.

What is your ultimate goal?

If you're trying to climb in 2wd or 4hi, what you're getting is normal. The 4.56 gears with your 35s are just like the stock ratio. Good thing you didn't go with the 4.10s like you were going to eh?

I doubt it's the trans filter, with what you're describing.

Use 4lo for climbing.

yeah i am gettin warns from snoborder.. but i just felt liek driving around and all just around town i would have more ass outta the bottom end..i realize im gettin around stock torque..but i did hav more ass with the stock gears and tires i feel..o well.. i cant get 4.88s now lol.. not one of you hav discussed the torq converter.. is that a bad idea? does anybody hav a beefed up tc?

...you know, i am wondering just by chance, if you got the 4.10's instead of 4.56's??? who installed your gears???

The heavier tires are definately making a negative difference.

Here's a gear chart to help you see where your ratio falls compared to stock ratios. The black band is stock power -- Green is lower than stock (less power to the wheels) and blue is higher than stock (more power to the wheels).

With 35s and 4:56, you are right at stock, plus the weight of the tire/wheel package and you are just about right in what you're feeling.

Glad to hear that the transmission is pulling.

The TC is really not the weak part of this drivetrain is it?

all the research and everything i had done had led me to the 4.56.. glfred helped me figure out thats wher i needed to be..those were the right gears right? lol.. and appalachian offroad here in westminster installed em..but im not worried bout getting the rong gears..they are 4.56.. i read a lot about people gettin beefed up t/c tho.. would that be a smart/efficient upgrade for me somewher on the road of my project?
