ok ive searched for a bout 3 days now, did some trial and error and searched the whole underside of the dash of my 99 explorer, ive read a 227 page ford alarm wiring manual... i can not find an answer... i have found a few other threads with this same question that have come to no end...
SOMEONE HAS TO KNOW HOW TO FIX THIS... heres the problem:
my battery went (probably from sitting too long, maybe my son turned interior lights on, maybe a door was ajar, dont know but it went dead when i tried to use it one day in the summer) i went and got a replacement battery and when i hooked up both cables the alarm immediately went off(the truck started and ran fine the last time it was used before the dead battery), didnt have my key so i disconnected the neg cable and went to get it... when i found the key i hooked the cable up and put the alarm went off, i figured no worries i stick the key in the on position and the alarm keeps going off, wouldnt crank etc... i disconnect the neg cable and let it sit for about 20 mins and find my fob... hook up the cable alarm goes off doors are all shut (1 door is rusted shut) key is in the ignition and the key fob does NOTHING wont unlock the doors nada... switched batteries in the key fob... still nada...
i found the keyless entry code and redid everything (pulled neg cable sat 15 mins cable back on) tried to enter code-nada... fast forward to now... i searched these boards and found a few different answers and alot of questions that didnt get answered... today i unplugged the alarm module(in the back drivers side cargo compartment) attatched the battery cable, the door locks locked, then cycled constantly on and off without unlocking i used the key fob, key, keyless entry code etc same issue... if no one can help im gonna have to take it to the ford deal, as of right now i feel like just junking the dam thing

I don't know if This will help you or not. The past week my son's alarm has been haunted and none of the remotes will work. We unhooked the battery and waited a while and then hooked it up. Of course the alarm goes off when you hook it back up. In our case the remotes then started working again????.
At least it works for about 24 hours.

We have also found that if we hit the over ride switch and turn the key on the alarm goes off and then the remotes start working again.

The over ride or Programing switch as sometime called is a small black push button located hidden (or not so hidden) under the dash. I have included a photo of my setup on my 97. It also has the valet switch. My son's EX has his button well hidden under the dash near the floor heater and the center console. I know it is there and still have trouble locating it. in his case the Valet switch is a push button located in the red led

I have learned over the years that it seems that none of the Ford alarms are the same. Of our three Ford vehicles two have 3 button remotes and on is a 2 button remote.
Of course there is also just the door remote / theft which honks the horn and then the alarm system that has the siren speaker.

I've gone on too long. See if you can determine what alarm system (model) that you have, how many buttons etc and post ot back up to see if anyone can help.

thanks SO much for the reply/effort Don... i have the 3 button fob... the alarm is for keyless entry no remote start... there is def NO switch like the one in the picture although i would be OPVERJOYED if it were like that lol i laid on my back with a flashlight and could not find a button, im going to get my small friend to try to find it hes 5'5" and like 120 like a half me lol, my wife was under there but she couldnt find it either... is there any way to totally disable the alarm?? i highly doubt it but its worth a shot, i doubt someone would even try to steal it and i dont keep anything valuable in there, it has a blue hatch(i backed into a flatbed at work sometime ago lol and the JY only had a good one in blue) maroon rest of it with dents in the hood, and improvised "hood pins"(long bolts with wing nuts)because i left the hood unlatched after a jump start a few years ago and i didnt wanna spend the 15$ on my beater lol its also annoying and loud while running with something screeching from the serpentine system while you drive it lol but it was a dependable, comfortable vehicle with 4wd plenty of cargo room and gets better gas mileage then anything else in my fleet, been driving my 02 Silverado Z71 WAY too much because the "exploder" is down :thumbdwn:

mods i have to apologize, i just realized that somehow i put this in the 02-05 forum... please put it in the proper forum for me and again i apologize i have no idea how it happened

do you have the factory manual for the factory alarm system??

there is a sequence where you have to have the driverside door open and the lights on ( something like that) to stop the system from alarming and sets it into "learn mode"

at this point you have to "teach" the alarm your key fob's then once you can control the locks and stuff you close the door shut off the lights and you should be good to go!

make sure you do this with the window down so you reach into the truck for any reason

thanks lizard thats good info that i havent heard yet... but no i do not have the manual, is there some place i can get that?

well i found this...

As far as I know and I have never heard of one, there is no reset button ( at least on my '99 ).

Still waiting

The PATS system saves your key data even during pcm and battery power loss. The key fobs have nothing to do with it. The keys themselves are secured and the only way to program new keys is with a Ford STAR tester, dealer only. It is not uncommon for things to unexpectedly to go wrong.

I wonder if you have an issue with an ajar switch in your hatch, doors or hood? Also, try this, on your keypad, hold the 7/8 and 9/0 buttons to lock all doors and then enter your code, do the doors unlock? What is your THEFT light doing on the dash when the key is on? Is there also a red light near the windshield? What is that doing while KO? Let me know.

Disabling the alarm system will not allow you to operate the vehicle. The PATS system will not allow the engine to run if there are issues with the alarm system.

I can look in the manual for my truck and see what it says to reset the codes. sorry been having other issues with my wifes chevy van

The PATS have changed over the years and some of what you get here may not apply to your vehicle. For instance, in my '98 Mark VIII, I can program my own keys. In the '02 Explorer, I have to have it done at the dealer since I only have one key.

Have you tried posting this in the other forums for your model year vehicle? There might be better or more relavant info there.

Good luck!

Thanks mercy, lizard, hook...
Well i tried the pats like u said mercy... the doors locked an my dumbass did not have any windows down, now it's locked and I cannot get in!

Hook I posted in this category on accident but I do have a few other posts on the same topic... I asked the mods to relocate it for me but I guess they haven't gotten around to it...
This thing is gonna have to go to ford now... Just reupped my AAA so hopefully they'll tow it for free :/

The Ford dealer can make short work of this diagnosis because they have the specialized STAR tester to dig right into the factory alarm system. I bet you won't have to spend more then 120 for the diagnosis, after that, you can repair the vehicle if it's simple.

start looking at the connectors at and around the module in the rear compartment (moisture corrosion), and at the wires around the door hinges - particularly the drivers door- and the rear cargo area hinges / latches. it is a know issue with these that a cracked wire caused by age and wear (opening closing door) can cause a ground fault like this.

Some people have had luck by spraying wd40 into and around the latch assemblies for interior lights that won't shut off. That may or may not help this too. Just a thought.

Thanks raja... If that's the case , my drivers side rear door is "frozen shut" from corrosion so that's probably it... Mercy if ford diagnoses it theyll fix it, it's 50miles from my house, once it gets there it's not coming home till it runs and drives... Looks like I'll just be waiting only wallet now

Just edited should make more sense now iPhone thinks it needs to change my words lol
