Hi, I recently bought a 99 explorer from a used car place. I've taken it to their shop for some things. I just came back today after telling them I had check engine light on and the warning chimes sounded for no reason I could tell. I now have no check engine light on ignition start up and no warning chimes sound at all. I suspect they disconnected these items. Can anyone tell me where to look for any modules or anything to see if they unhooked them? I want proof before I go raising hell. I checked my fuses in dash and under dash all I found was a covered relay box or something, but I couldn't find anything pulled there. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. It seems like they wanted to fix it for good.

Whoa--
You are right on--
The check engine light illuminates with key on, to show it has powered on--
You are on the right track in your thinking. I will study a wiring diagram--maybe someone will chime in with a more specific plug or area to look at

go to autozone get your codes read.

Well, I took apart the dash and the bulb was indeed removed. I put the one from the fuel reset light in there and the check engine light shines brightly. I don't know what I am going to do yet. I'm so mad I could spit. I like the truck but the fact that they lied to me burns me up. At least I got a new alternator out of them. I had the codes read at advance auto parts, they said it was a general fault, something about maybe dirty fuel injectors. I ran some fuel system cleaner through it(B-12 Chemtool). I'll have to wait and see. And I don't want to ever see that dang service center again. Thanks for all your input guys, I really appreciate it lots.

I would first try to contact the dealership you bought it from, if they aren't wililng to assist you, I would threaten legal action with the state's attorney general's office in regards to consumer fraud. They knowingly altered the vehicle's components to prevent the CEL from illuminating and the chime. The attorney general would definately threaten to take their business license for these actions.

I know down in MD/VA the attorney general/state police can shut down a auto dealership for actions like this especially if it happened on numerous vehicles @ their facility. There was a recent shutdown of a small used car lot near me. Apparently they had over 10 cars that wouldn't have passed a inspection even though they had inspection stickers on them..
