No movement after transmission fluid change

Ok 01 ford ranger 4.0l 5R55E

Truck started slipping into neutral when coming to a stop and stayed in neutral. Messed with the gear selector and gave it a little gas to get going. Would also slip through gears at highway speeds.

I did some research and decided to drop the pan change the filter and separator plate gaskets. Removed valve body very carefully replaced both gaskets and torqued everything to spec and in the proper sequence. Filled the transmission with 4 quarts to start. Started the engine and filled to proper level. Then I jumped into the truck to move it through the gears and I noticed it was difficult to get out of park. After applying a little bit of pressure it was able to shift through the gears but I had no forward movement in any gears and no reverse.

Not sure where to go from here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated ! I need to get back and forth to work

Welcome to this forum! It's possible that the shift linkage in the transmission isn't in the correct location. There is a pin which is connected to a half circle gear with teeth. The manual slide valve's groove on the transmission is suppposed to have the pin in it.

Thank you for the warm welcome! And thank you for the quick reply! Unfortunately I'm having a little trouble grasping what you are trying to explain. I'm pretty sure i know the "half circle gear with teeth" you are referring to. If I'm not mistaken it's inside the pan and there is a arm that rides over the teeth as you select the gears. Correct?

There is a pin that engages into a slot on that assembly. Everything is in the transmission so you can't see it until you remove the pan.

Ok I'll check it out on my next day off (tues)..let's say the pin was in the correct spot . Is there any thing else I should check for while I have the pan off?

So I had some time to pull the pan off and I found that the pin you were talking about is broken ...now what? Is there some guidline on how to replace this ?

You could replace the gear with the pin or remove the gear, drill a hole, then use a bolt or a screw in place of the pin.

I hate to be a pain but is there a how to on how to remove the gear? My only concern is the rod that connects to the gear..I can't clearly see how to disconnect it.

You will need a socket to unscrew the locknut on the outside of the transmission. The pin on the bottom of the case is a little tricky to remove. Use 2 flat screwdrivers to grip the pin while pulling it out.

Just to be clear we are referring to part 994 of the internal linkage to "use to flat screwdrivers..." To remove the pin?

I'm referring to the roll pin in the bottom of the case under the pan gasket which is 761P-4. Here's the link: https://www.wittrans.com/SchematicParts.aspx?Transmission=A4LD/4R44E/4R55E/5R55E&LinkCode=761P-4. You don't have to reuse this roll pin if you don't want to. I prefer to insert a nail, then bend it into the groove in the lower part of the case. It's much easier to remove when the time comes.

Be careful while trying to remove this pin. I once broke the case, and had to buy another one for a couple hundred. The end of the pin protrudes a fraction out of the case. 2 flat screwdrivers press against the end of the pin pointing down toward the case. Both screwdrivers simultaneously move away from the case while applying pressure against the pin. The case is used as a fulcrum.

Ended up removing the valve body to give me enough clearance to remove the gear..would it be wise to get a new seperator plate gasket? this one is basically brand new
