I read some threads, and did not come to any that started where to begin with trouble shooting. If anyone knows of one that I overlooked, can you send a link to me?
The '95 X O/D did not work when I bought it. The light does not come on, never did. It does not go into O/D. I guess I will do a tranny flush/filter change, but what after that? Shifts fine, so my guess is the modulator is good. The gear lever looks in good shape, but the prnd21 red pointer is not aligned correctly, it is between gear markings when move into gear, ie...poiter is between o/d3 and 2 when it seats into gear, looks like it is in N when it is Reverse. Other than that, I dunno. Could really use O/D on the hwy! Eating up gas like crazy w/high RPMS.

The 4R55E doesn't use a modulator. Check the TPS, VSS, 3-4 shift solenoid, wiring harness, valve body gasket, valve body bolts, overdrive servo, and the overdrive band.

WOW! In that order?
I have the 4.0 ohv control trac, I just got this rig a few weeks ago, I was not even sure which tranny it had! I was hoping it was just the button or something like that (wishful thinking). Would it show up on a code reader? The check engine light is not on.

A local bone yard had a 2nd gen X. We just swapped out the button switch in the shifter. The rim of the button has a snap ring made of plastic that pry's up and out. There is a tiny little notch to insert a small precision screwdriver into. You lift up ever so gently and sort of walk it up and out. Once the plastic retainer ring is out, the button simply lifts right out.
I guess my button was old and tired, a used one works like a new one for me.

One thing we noted was that the dash light will not work if the switch is not grounded. It is grounded to the column itself. The wire runs through the shifter, and plugs into the harness below the dash, above the column. The shifter itself is the ground, when it is connected to the column.
