hey guys, my reverse lights stopped working last friday. i was muddin and got stuck really bad, everything was bottomed out. anyway it happened during the night that was stuck, i was trying to get unstuck and put it in reverse and noticed i couldnt see behind me lol. anyway they still dont work, i tested and there is no juice going to the light bulb socket. its a 5-speed, im sure that makes a difference as to how the lights are activated....no too big of a concern just want to get it fixed some time, thanks for the help

Check the reverse switch on the transmission.

how do i go about checking this? ill consult the haynes manual, maybe it'll be in there

It's a 2 wire part on the transmission with a part on the bottom that moves in, and out when you engage reverse. There is a part (some sort of cam) that pushes this part in. You could test it by pulling out this part, and pressing the bottom of it. It's like a push button switch.

ok ill try checking that the next nice day...been raning all day....i did not check any fuses first like i should have...i dont have a manual so i dont have a diagram of fuses and what they are for...

FYI the fuse for the backup lights is 27. I've had many a headache trying to get my backup lights to work. I have a wiring problem/short somewhere, but I'd check that fuse, you might get lucky. :)

ill go check the fuse right now. is there possibly a diagram to fuses and what they are for here on forum somewhere? or should i just buy a manual? thanks

EDIT: Fuse 27 is fine but i looked in my moms manual (95) and it says that fuse is for: under hood lamp, map lights, glove box lamp, dome lamps, visor lamps, accessory delay, Dr switch illum., and 4x4 system .... not the reverse lights, maybe your V-8 is different

guess i missed it it is fuse 26 for me and it is also ok. ill be getting underneath it in a minute to check the tranny thing, im guessing it will be on top right behind the stick?

Well, all i have to say is 2 words....PROBLEM SOLVED!!! i got under the truck and first thing i seen was the group of wires on drivers side of tranny, ones comeing off the O2 sensors etc. and i seen a red connector not plugged into anything, plugged it back onto the plug on the side of the tranny, and bang, we have lights, thanks for the help guys, much appreciated!!!

Frayed wire under steering column

On my 96 Explorer, I noticed after replacing the 26 fuse and placing the vehicle in drive, the fuse would blow. The problem was a frayed wire under the steering column cover. I removed three screws from the underside & removed the housing. The overdrive on/off switch has a wire that had a small nick that would short out. It was very hard to see the small fray. The fix was easy, a small piece of electrical tape & I was back in tip top shape. Hope that works for someone else. Good luck.

Hi everyone!!Rear light is helpful for you and another drivers.Check your rear light and front light indicators also before any long journey.
