1st: I it possible get your exhaust on the standard v6 on the 1st gen x to get the low frequency rumble sound from your that you would get on....say an expedition,

2nd: What will an exhaust tip do for you sound wise with the factory exhaust system?

To get the V6 to sound like a V8 is a long, complex procedure of cutting the back of the motor off and adding 2 cylinders... :D

There are a ton of threads about exhaust and how it sounds on here. Pretty much impossible to get a V6 to rumble like a V8, but some guys have got them sounding pretty good.

This is from another thread with pretty much the same question:

Dynomax, Gibson, and Flowmaster all make bolt-on catback exhaust systems for the Explorer.

Which one sounds more like a V8 is up to you.

The Gibson uses a 2.5" pipe with internal muffler louvres and sounds more ratty, with the BRAPPPP sound on acceleration and when you let off the gas in gear typical of straight-through mufflers and big pipes.

The Dynomax uses 2.25" pipe and has a deep muffled sound. Really nice if you want a performance increase without a ton more noise. Better for low-end torque of the OHV motor than high-end RPM use.

The Flowmaster uses a 50-series SUV muffler and sounds like...a Flowmaster. Good if you like their sound, but the muffler baffling system uses restriction to achieve it, much like an OEM-type muffler.

As pictured, you can also install a muffler of your own choosing, or go to an exhaust shop and have them fabricate something. It's also possible to combine parts (say another brand 2.25" in/out muffler that's similar in size to the Dynomax, but buy the Dynomax rear pipe, and bolt it all on using strap clamps or welding)

Magnaflow makes some pretty good straight-through mufflers, that are a straight through design, and heavy and packed with material so there's a pretty deep and somewhat loud sound to them. They may sound the most like a V8 if you're looking for noise. Otherwise I'd suggest the Dynomax Super Turbo system for a deep sound that's louder than stock, but not as noisy as other mufflers.

Use the search bar at the top and you will find a ton of threads with info that you are looking for! Good luck.

Well put! :D

1st: You can get a low frequency rumble at idle with most performance mufflers. This is simply due to the performance muffler providing less noise supression and more exhaust flow. The 4.0L V6 in Explorers also has a lower frequency exhaust sound due to it's large pistons and valves. Each engine sounds different though, and it would be quite costly to tune an engine exhaust for sound, with the output frequency of a completely different engine as the goal. Your best bet is to pick from the available mufflers and/or catback exhaust systems for your vehicle, and use the one with the sound you like best, if exhaust noise is the most important aspect for you.

2nd: An exhaust tip does nothing, functionally, especially with a factory exhaust system. A very thin stainless steel tip of sufficient length and diameter might resonate enough with a noisy aftermarket exhaust to give you a ricer fart can sound. Another exception might be a large cone or trumpet shaped tip that would help ease the transition from the small diameter pipe into the atmosphere, but it would likely look dumb, and not provide enough benefit to be worth the expense, or the reduction in ground clearance.

The exhaust tip I put on mine before I put my Flowmaster actually gave it a little more rumble. Of course, it wasn't loud at all, and I couldn't hear it from the cab. For what I paid for it, save the money and get a muffler.

However, If you decide to go the full catback route, there is an 07 mustang gt at our shop now and it has a full MAC catback and full length headers, and it sounds amazing. Obviously you can't expect that kind of sound from your truck, but I'm sure it wouldn't sound bad.

no matter what you do the v8 has a unique sound you get because of the amount of cylinders. you can get a decent sound with an exhaust setup but you can never really get that same rumble as a good ole v8

Exactly, we are just contemplating ways to make it as deep and rumble-y as possible as a V6

Can you say to a trumpet " stop being so tiny and sound like a tuba" ?
No
such is Mango

i can tell you what not to do. don't run pipes straight from the cats. that's how mine is and it annoys me every day. it sounds like a little ricer but about 2x as loud. it does decent on gas though because of the lower restriction but i wouldn't recommend it
