Now this is messed up!!

so friends i was going down a road by my house today, and it has construction signs out at each end of it.....they've been up for about a month now but the only construcstion the county has done is mess it up more.

so i was driving down the road, and the speed limit is 45, but i know where the big bump is so i slowed way down to like 20..........and got over it.....my turn was about 50ft passed it.... but i look i my side mirrors and see a spare tire on the ground.....i was like HA, then thought, maybe its mine.....so i got out and checked and i'll be damned it is mine, the cable holding the tire snapped.

hmmm it makes you wonder what would have happened to my truck if i would have been going their alloted 45mph, what if someone was right on my ass and they got injured by the spare falling off?
lastly, who is going to pay so that i have a spare if i ever get a flat?! NOT ME, i'm not paying for the county departments mistakes......

i'll tell them, if they refuse to pay then if i ever need my spare i'm calling them up and telling them to come fix it for me since i don't have one thanks to their crap a$$ road.

i'm raging right now!!!!!!!!!!

When the county was redoing the road in-front of our house, they decided to redo all the driveway parts in the parkway (beyond the sidewalk). My wife didn't realize it and hit it full speed bottoming out - she bent her lower A-Arm suspension support. She called the county and received a, 'there's nothing we can do, call the contractor' response. We did. We did a lot until they finally responded when we threatned with a layer. They finally paid up, but again, we had to threaten them. I don't get it, they're working on our tax money, yet they treat us like animals.

but to better my chances my dad works for the county highway dept. so maybe he can talk to his boss about it...and they can just cut me some money...

cuz it pisses me off, but i know the only time i need the spare tire is when i don't have it.

ahh well something will get worked out.......but i'm gonna get somethign for that...cuz thats garbage

It sucks that your spare tire fell out but stop whining and get a new mechanism. The cables do rust out and brake its just part of owning a car. go out and by yourself a new cable or better yet through your spare up on your roof.

About a month ago I read a post from someone in Canada that just received a recall notice for spare tire cables that could fail causing the spare tire to fall off. I can't remember the model years it covered but the spare tire falling off seems to be a pretty common occurance with people in the snowy areas. If the recall is like other weather related problems, it might eventually become a mandatory recall for all vehicles regardless of location. Be sure and save your receipt for a new mechanism and cable in case it does become a recall on yours. Also be sure and file a complaint with the NHTSA. If they get enough complaints, they will look into the matter and if they determine too many spare tires fall off of the Explorers they will mandate that Ford issue a recall.

IMHO - don't blame everything on somebody else...... honest now.... your truck is 10 years old and things rust you know....... just because cable snapped doesn't mean it's Ford's problem....... it's been 10 years since they installed it and it is now your responsibility to make sure it works OK.....

what now? should they give every new car a 20 year warranty?

I just called my local dealership and they looked up my VIN and said there were no open campains for my vehicle. Mine is a '93 Sport and he said there wasn't a recal for it. Who knows.

I guess if you get it really muddy without cleaning it regularly the cable will eventually rust.

The part shouldn't cost very much fron the salvage yard. Good luck!

I am not saying that its really the road service part but I have to say just bc the car is 10 yrs old doesn't mean the tire should just fall off. Ford made a mistake with the mechanism and if they recalled in Canada they should recall them all. This isn't like, "hey my glove box won't stay closed or This stupid electronic thing doesn't work right" this IS "HOLY CRAP my tire just fell off at 70mph on the highway and smashed through the wondow of the car behind me!!!!!!!!!!"

If there are defects (I don't care if its 10 yrs old) Ford should fix it. If its supposed to be one of those replace deals it should be in the manual. I know I have to change hoses, breaks, fluids, etc but IF I am supposed to change the spare tire holder they have an obligation to inform us. They could have come up with a different mount system or even a saftey latch but they didn't. So, if the cable goes, better watch out! Like carring a bomb and not knowing when it will go off.
Course took a big deal to get the Firestone tire deal going, probably same thing. Unless it is cost efficient no recall, unless govt has to step in.
Just step up if there has been a fault, take care of it, and you will win over many. Standing behind a product reguardless of what it is will get you a LONG way.
Thats just my opinion though, I could be wrong !

Whenever something is manufactured with a defect that could cause injuries to someone, the manufacturer IS RESPONSIBLE no matter how old the vehicle is whether it be 1 month or 10 years. Age is not a requirement for a recall. If 5 spare tires fall off of every 100 '92 Explorers and only 5 spare tires fall off of every 10000 '92 Chevy trucks, I would say Ford is responsible to correct the problem. I do not know what the numbers are nor do I know what the numbers are for Chevy trucks but I do know that I have seen probably 15 or 20 complaints in the last few years from Explorer owners. Unless anyone else here has done a study to determine the exact numbers, they are in no position to say that it isn't Ford's responsibility since the vehicle is 10 years old. Since Ford did apparently issue a recall in Canada, someone somewhere determined that there was at least a problem up north.

Just like the throttle body recall that was issued for throttle bodies freezing up in the winter, I am not a big fan of recalls that are location specific. What happens when someone purchases their Explorer in a warm climate and then moves to a colder climate? Of course living in Arizona my spare tire cable on my '97 looks brand new, still covered with the original Ford grease. If I moved up north there is nothing in my Ford Maintenance Guide that specifies to lower the spare tire and grease the cable at any sort of interval. If there was something like that in the manual then that would shift the responsibility to the owners. Right now the way I see it is it is Ford's responsibility unless a study is done to determine otherwise.

looks like more and more now we're looking for someone else to blame every time there is a problem with something.

Pretty soon we'll be able to return merchandise to the store even after many years of usage just because we don't like it anymore and demand a full refund of a purchase price..... what a beautiful country!

I'm not saying here that safety recalls are not necessary - by all means! but let's be honest . . . . upkeep is our responsibility too. If something falls off a semi it's drivers responsibility - cause he's suppose to check the truck before leaving....... if something falls off a car...... it's manufacturers responsibility.../????\...

Just a note - when you change the mechanism.... keep the old one and the receipt - if there was a recall in Canada chances are that pretty soon they will recall these mechanisms in the States as well.

so if i get a new spare tire holder......each day before i leave, i'm supposed to check it to make sure it won't fall off again? what about all the other stuff that is "probable" or "likely" to fall off, should i spend my valvueable time checking FORD's work , just to make sure that I won't injury myself or worse someone else when i'm driving at no fault of mine have something come undone or loose, or brake....accidents do happen yes.........cables do rust..

anyways my point was supposed to be, if this broke when i was going 20mph, and it was still ruff as hell, what happens to a person who doesn't know how bad the bump is..and they are going 45mph, and their tire falls off and they die, because the lousy road construction people tore up the road and have yet to even begin to start repairs on it....

If Ford does know about the defect and it is in quite a few explorers , THEY SHOULD RECALL IT. Its that easy, if they know but do nothing to inform us....and someone gets killed do to it....itsn't that like knowing a murder will happen, knowing who is gonna do it...but saying nothing.... think about it.

When I bought my 93, I was on my way home from picking it up and got home and realized that my spare was missing. I know it was there when I got it because I looked under it to see if it was a firestone. I went back but didnt see it anywhere. I went to a junk yard and picked up a rim and tire for $30 and then took a piece of pipe about 5" long, drilled a hole though it and put the cable through it and then put a few wire clamps on it to hold it. Good as new.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention... When I was at the junk yard getting the rim and tire, I also wanted to get a spare tire winch thing or whatever its called but... they didnt have any left. Go figure.
