The truck is 2002 explorer, 4x4 XLT 65000 miles. The previous owner has changed the solenoid for the tranny 6 months ago since the overdrive light flashed. But since the ownership has changed there is no warranty for this.

The overdrive light flashes when the speed is over 50 mph and will not stop till the engine shut down. However, when i press the overdrive button seems it does downshift so i can accelerate faster at the speed of over 60 mph. I did not feel any downshifting or upshifting delay (if there is any delay, it must be very little and does not happen all the time). The RPM is about 2100 at 65 mph and 2600 at 75 mph.

I took it to my mechanic and he cannot pull out any code using his aftermarket reader. Actually it was two months ago. I started worrying now since the winter is coming and I do not want it dead on the road. Any suggestions? What should I do now?

If your OD light is still flashing there has to be a code in there. What kind of Mechanic did you take it to and what kind of scanner did he use? You have to have a special scanner to read the transmission codes. I would suggest calling around to different tranny shops, most will pull the code for you for free in hopes of ripping you off later. The first tranny shop I saw I pulled in and they got the codes for me for free with their $20,000 scanner, just dont leave your truck there....:) Get the codes and post back.

Thanks guys. I went to a transmission shop and they pulled the code. It is P0741. Torque Clutch performance/stuck off....They want to charge me $1200 to fix it and it would take a few days coz they gonna take the transmission out and after they find what is wrong with it they would put it back. That is all what they told me. Any suggestions? Thanks a lot.

This Quote is from Glacier911 on another post with somebody that had the same code. This guy had a 98 Ranger so I dont know if it will be the same advice but hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in. FYI, for future reference a quick search of the forum your in will usually turn out tons of information of people with the same problems and fixes. I just searched for "P0741" in this forum to find this. You could also try a search with your year, make, model, and code.

"P0741 can mean many things... not JUST the torque convertor. The entire circuitry that applies the TC clutch can be involved. In fact most P0741's are either the TCC solenoid or the TCC modulator valve in the Valve Body NOT the TC itself.

Were it me, I'd try replacing the TCC (and maybe EPC depending on mileage) solenoid and see what happens and if that did not fix it rebuild the VB.... the TCC solenoid replacement is not difficult.

In other words, a rebuilt VB (with new TCC and EPC solenoids) has about a 95% chance of fixing the problem."-Glacier911

I dont know what tranny you have but a quick read through the first two pages of "The 5R55E Valve Body Rebuild Diary" at the top of this forum in the stickys should give you a good idea of the TCC Sylanoid, where it is, and how to replace it. On my truck you can just drop the tranny pan and change the sylaniod, very simple.
