I have 96 Ford Ranger 4.0 auto, got similar problem. After 7-10 miles O/D light will start to blink and it will start to shift hard be twin gears if you stop and start again(1,2 gear).
But if i park the car and i live it for willie it will go away and will com back again after some miles.Their is no any codes or engine light.I believe must be some electrical problem.

When the OD light flashes there is a trans problem and the computer stores a code. A standard OBD2 code reader can't read trans codes. You need a reader that can read DTC trans codes. You need to get the code pulled.

I can tell you from experience, there is a problem. What you are experiencing is called "limp home mode", where the computer detects a problem, then ramps up the system pressure so you can get off the road and get it repaired. The increased pressure is why you can feel the hard shifts.

The experts here will tell you to get the codes read, but a run of the mill scanner will not read transmission, ABS, or airbag codes. I had mine read on the Snap-On SOLUS PRO scanner, and was very thankful my old boss only charged me $25.00.

Transmission codes, like all codes, can be very cryptic, sometimes not pinpointing the exact cause. It could be an electrical problem, or a seal, or gasket, torque converter, or something else.

I also was getting an intermittent flashing of the O/D OFF indicator lamp (very common), and against the sage advice of experts, continued to drive until I could get by the shop. Well, on the way to the shop, the transmission gave out. I could have possibly saved the transmission if I had parked it sooner.

All I can say is get the codes read, by someone that you trust.
