I have a 95 Explorer XLT with the 4R55E tranny and the "O/D off" light keeps flashing and doesn't stop. The transmission also get up to 3000 rpms before itll shift into second and it will actually sit at 3000 for a while unless I take my foot off of the accelerator. Whether or not it will shift into 3rd I don't know I'm too afraid to even try so I haven't been driving it.

I have heard of people having similar problems and having the tranny rebuilt and it not fixing the problem. I have also heard that the PCM could very well be the problem since it was Ford's first year of having electronically controlled trannys. I did unhook the battery for about 10 minutes and when I hooked it back up and drove it the light was off but now the "4lo 4 high" light would flash and then go off for about 2 min and then flash again and go off. About 20 minutes later the "O/D off" light started flashing again constantly and the "4lo 4 high" was off.

I am wondering if anyone has had this problem and if it is the PCM, where can I get a new or upgraded one? Looking on the net all I find are this JET performance modules or a Cardone Engine Computer/ECU/PCM is what it says on Ebay...As I have no clue what exactly I am looking for could someone please point me in the right direction of what the PCM looks like and it the link to the JET brand would replace it?? Or any other reasons as to why this might be happening to my Explorer and possible solutions. Thanks!! :)

There is a code stored in the computer, get the codes read. Do not disconnected the battery before getting codes read.

Yeah I read online in a couple different places that resetting the computer by unhooking the battery fixed the problem for some people. That's the only reason I did it.

I had the codes read and Im not sure what the code number was exactly but I need a band replaced. At least it's not a complete rebuild. Pretty happy about it.

I wouldn't be to happy as to replace a band requires removing and tear down, you should have a seal kit installed at the same time.

The mechanic doing it is very trustworthy and a close friend my family's mechanic and he has been working on them for as long as I can remember. Anytime we have had a tranny problem it goes to him. I know it requires a tear down but it's a lot less expensive than having it rebuilt and he'll clean it up and will tell me anything else he finds. But if he says it will be good after he replaces the band then I'm not going to worry about it. My step dad took his truck there a few years back and had something replaced in it without having it rebuilt and so far so good he hasn't had anymore problems. I wouldn't take it to just any tranny shop and expect the same treatment by any means lol.

sorry to highjack the thread but im having the same issues with a used tranny i had put in a couple weeks ago. sometimes when i start the car theres no light but sometimes it freaks out and shifts violently hard from park through drive. 6 codes in total came out with most of them going back to solenoids 2 and 3. so far it seems electrical, trannie has 65k, just got it flushed a couple days after i had it put in. anyone care to help ease my mind?
