2001 Explorer Sport. 5r55e. I have searched the archives and not found anything on this one. The O/D off light is not working, and I cant stop it from going into OD. Anyone have the answer or suggestions on a cause or the fix?

Most likely there is a broken wire near the base of the shifter, under the boot. Common problem. Normally have to replace the shifter lever as the wires are broke right at the shift lever.
Check your fuses. It shares the same circuit as the power point/cigar lighter.

I took my 96 lever apart, the end with the button does come apart allowing you to get the wires and switch out to repair.
I tested the small wires for continuity to the switch, to confirm once I found the break that the button/switch itself did work.
I soldered the broken connection, heat shrinks and re-installed it, works 100%.
The end of the plastic handle did get a little "*****ed ip" during the process but it does come out and can be rebuilt.

Fixed the O/D off problem

I finally got around to fixing the OD off problem. Took off the plastic covers around the steering column and the wire that goes up into the shift stalk was worn bare in 2 places. I just wrapped the spots in e tape and it fixed it.
