o/d off switch not working 2010 xlt

just bought a 4k# travel trailer and notice that my od off is not working.
#1-no light on dash, button dies absolutely nothing.
#2 i am a complete idiot at running a multimeter.
#3 is there any difference between have od switch off and running in 3rd gear?
#4 i am heading to stealership tomorrow for this. if #3 is no then i will pass if fix is $$$. so hoprfully get a reply soon

If you are a 4.0 L V6, you have a five speed transmission and turning the overdrive off will lock out fifth gear only, giving you 1,2,3,4

Putting the shifter in position three will only give you 3rd gear, not recommendable for starting from a stop particularly when towing a trailer.

i thought tranny was 4 gear not 5

V-6 is five speed, V8 is six speed

And both have 4 non-overdrive gears

It's probably in the switch in the gear shift lever itself, that or the electrical connection at the base of the lever has a corroded terminal.

ok brought to stealership and the want to replqce the whole shift assembly for 400$. i asked the shop foreman about relacing just the button and he said yeah but need to take apart the whole shift assembly to do that anyway. so mine as well replace the whole assembly while at it
