OBD code reading

Hi!

I have been searching the web for a code reading tool for the OBD-II system.
It seams to be a jungle of different equippments. ScanTool, AutoTap and many many more!

Can any of you recommend some specific model?
I would like a "ready to use" one, not a "build it your self".

Is it possible to use a lap top computer with software and a cable?

What do you want to do? Just read codes? View live data streams? Capture data?

Are you planning on using this on American cars? Asian or European?

I think I left some important information! Thank's NHale623 for waking me up!

I have 99' Explorer and I want to know why my check engine light is on.
I will be able to read the codes, and the clear the error codes and turn off the check enginelight.

Anyone know of a software/cable combination that works with a handheld (iPAQ) type device?

I really don't want to lug a laptop into the car, I almost always have my PDA (yeah, I'm a geek)

It's expensive but get a scanguage. You can read and clear trouble codes but it does a ton of other useful cool stuff. www.scanguage.com The have the scanguage 2 out now that they charge even more than they did for the original model. You could probably pick up the original for a pretty good price off of ebay.

If you just want a cheap coder reader you can get any one of these from Harbor freight
