What's going on everybody? I definitely need help troubleshooting a shifting problem. When I put my gear selector in OD, my tranny acts like it is taking off in second gear, completely missing first. During acceleration in OD, if I pull it down in to drive, it downshifts and takes off like a bat out of hell!! I have a 93 XLT with a 96 4.0 (MAS and 96 fuel system, 93 plenum and long block.) We pretty well ruled out the gov/fly weights sticking because it should be sticking all the time. The tranny also does not want to drop into passing gear in OD, so we changed the cable. No luck. This is the only problem I have, and the reason I don't want to suck it up are the facts that I can't afford fuel driving around in drive all the time, especially since I have no other way to pull my boat. Any advice at all would be great. At least try to point me in the right direction. Thanks.

Welcome to this forum! You mentioned that you replaced the kickdown cable. Check to see if it is adjusted correctly. If you have an overdrive problem, there are a few things to check. You could start by adjusting the overdrive band. If it feels like you can't get the band to tighten to 120 In.-lbs., then the band could have broken. In that case, you could remove the pan to see if there are any parts inside of it. The overdrive servos rot away after a peroid of time from the heat of the catalytic converter (especially if the heat shield is missing, or damaged). If you decide to drop the valve body, check the overdrive solenoid, and screen for any debris that could be clogging it.

Did I mention I have no problems going into overdrive, whether it be manually or auto? Also, this tranny is new to this truck, but only had 77k on it when I installed it. (We did change the fluid before installation.) The problem didn't surface for about 5k. My mechanic says to jerk it out and replace it would be cheaper than repairing it. Given the fact that OD functions correctly, could I still have a band or servo issue?

Thanks for the advice. I am having a baby boy Thursday (3rd child, already have two girls,) so I won't be able to do any good until Mon or Tues. I'll let you know. I am anxious to figure it out. Hopefully it doesn't mean a tranny swap for the fourth time!!

Congratulations on the new baby! I'm surprised that you could estimate the exact day when the baby will arrive. My wife, and her sister gave birth 2 weeks early, so maybe they have a genetic pattern that is some how predictable.

C-section, no psychic abilities I'm afraid. I will check the modulator hose tomorrow. That shouldn't be cut and dry. Thanks for all the help. If you're ever in KY, or if you need any diesel parts, look me up. I'll keep you posted.

I am the GM of a truck parts business. My girlfriend's step-dad owns it. We sell used/rebuilt parts for diesel engines, trannys, and diffs. Mostly Class * stuff. I do have some surplus Ford motors if you know anybody that needs them. 1- 460 rebuilt short block, 2- 400 Ford rebuilt long blocks, 1- 360 Ford rebuilt long block, 1- 5.0L Chevy (Vortec heads) rebuilt long block, 1- 300 Ford rebuilt short block. I also have over 500 gasoline cranks (327, 318, 383, 400, 360 Chrysler, 351M and C that I need to get rid of. We don't do much with gas, and from what I can tell, there is no money in the components. Let me know. (I also have 50-75 small block Chevy heads)

let me understand.... you feel like you lack 1st gear but have reverse just fine? All other gears work ok? What does the fluid look like?
