Well my friends both have jeeps and they do a little off-roading with their 4 wheel drive, and i was wondering how much worse 2 wheel drive really is than 4 wheel drive for off-roading?

Welcome!

Have you tried the search engine? There are many threads about this already, not much use typing it all over again.

Also try searching for my old truck, "Splat"

2wd sucks off road, unless you're building a pre-runner any 4wd will run circles around you. But thats just the way it goes, You don't have the same amount of traction as a 4wd vehicle nor do you have low range. You can do some pretty simple stuff but you'll be getting stuck where a 4wd vehicle will have no problem.

If you really want to go offroading with a 2wd, some things that really help are wider tires and a locker(or at least a limited slip) for better traction.

You may also consider a winch and a pull pal, or at least a high lift hack, a good tow strap and a buddy with 4x4.

a locker is a must, Limited slip wont do a damn thing for you with 2wd.

Go here if you really want to see what the 2wd guys can do:
www.dezertrangers.com

However keep in mind, high speed in the dirt sand = 2wd okay.
trails, rocks, mud = 4x4 needed.

a locked 2wd is just about as good as an open diff 4x4 depending on the truck, thats right I said it!!!

It sucks. My 2 wheel drive Explorer doesn't do well on anything except pavement. But if you must, do keep moving. If you're just going on dry trails or something you'll be fine, but dunes, mud, etc will suck
