Have you tried ding a full oil change on the box mate, I understand that you have to repeat it around 4 times to get all the crap out, but it seems to work- loads of threads on this subject. Let me know what turns out in the end.

have you checked the power cables and had a diagnostic run? on mine the 3rd gear solinoid is abit packed up so it slips into 3rd, even after adjusting the bands its helped alittle bit, even buyin a solinoid from the usa is a rip off in shipping, £25 for it and £55 for shipping

Rich, have you tried taking the gearbox sump off and looking to see if the filter is clogged. I washed mine but can't say there were any bits in it. Have you tried adjusting the brake bands?
As you know, I've had trouble with mine, but after changing the fluid, adding a extra cooler and washing the filter, mine completed towing the caravan with no major problems. The torque converter sometimes took a while to lock up, but its definitly better than it was.

thanks guys for the help,
yer twice changed the fluid and was better still the o/d light problem but now sticks in 1st have to manualy change up now sometimes
I guess im afraid to get a diagnostic done for fear of being ripped off, having it all ripped apart at some extortionate rate then having to pay for a rebuild, which will cost 1000,s
plus theres a grating sound in 1st really i think a good 2nd hand one then regular fluid changes is the way to go ,or my cousin in usa could post me a rebuild kit which is an option, but im afraid ill need special tools ect and end up with a load of hassle dillema eh...
im in touch with a guy who sell me one at £225,plus i get to test drive it if im quick before other bits go.... I have to remove it then fit it,
jason at explorer parts also told me it was well stuffed and would change it for £550 which seems very reasonable .
I have a van to run round in so no biggy at the moment plus she still drives

Sounds if a good second hand box is the way to go Rich.
If you are interested, I have a Ford CD that I got off flea bay. It has a section on dismantling the gear box. There don't seem to be any special tools that you couldn't fabricate yourself. I cant see a copyright on it but I could try and do a copy for you. [limited computer skills allowing]
Kev.

cheers kev for agreeing really is a toughy,
might take you up on the offer if i decide to have a go at a rebuild, but its probably beyond what I can do at home
glad yours is behaving
cheers dude
