Off to the dark side...

Tried to visit Ebbets Pass last Saturday.. We made it Arnold, CA and wiht a check engine light and a super hot engine, we turned around and came home.

Pulled codes and it's complaining about the fan control system not responding. Lucky for us, we could drive it back home, just no idling the engine at stops.

At the dealership now, the fan system is a dealer only item for diagnosis.

Which engine? 7.3 V8 or V10? (I assumed it was the tow rig, then I realized this is the thread for the J**p. Whoops.) LOL

It has the 3.6l V6, which has it own set of problems.. They actually used parts of this engine in Maserati's.

Of course, that's why they can be the biggest POS..

Just got the phone call.

Engine oil has gasoline in it, which means either cracked, warped head/blocks or blown head gaskets.

Choice is tear it down, and see what's wrong, or just go straight to a replacement engine.

Engine also has the dreaded lifter tick which a replacement engine would solve.

That sucks. How many miles on the car? If theres gas in the oil, it would be better to get another engine.

So, how about a 5.7 Hemi swap?

104k miles.

Hemi swap would be great, except I don't feel like dealing with CARB about it..

Fuel in the oil and they immediately think it's because of a compromised deck surface? No chance it's an issue with the fuel injection system? Did they do a compression test or test for blowby in the coolant?

They pulled a spark plug, and noted coolant in the cylinder.

The 3.6L block and heads are aluminum, and the heads are known to warp at 255 degrees, which the engine did get to (briefly). The cost of tear down, exam, new heads/valve gear (remember, this engine has bad lifters/rockers in it, which also injects metal into the oil) is not much less than a new replacement long block engine with warranty.

If I had the time and facilities, sure, pull the engine, tear it down, check everything, replace what needs to be replaced which at this is all of the rockers and lifters, possibly the heads, the engine oil pump, engine oil cooler, the thermostat and housing, crank bearings (metal from the stupid rocker design failure), the water pump, etc. etc.

So the choice is based on what I can get done locally and quickly.

Got it. I didn't realize they had found coolant as well.

X2 for the 5.7 swap. In the near future, there's some positive changes about to happen that limit what carb can do.

If you were closer or the Arizona house was finished I would spend some time trying to convince you it needs a 5.7 Hemi. We could do that swap in 2-3 days if you had the parts. I bet the cost would be close to what you are going to pay the dealership to put the same problematic engine in. CARB wouldn't be too much of a problem unless Dodge never made a vehicle with a 5.7 in the Jeeps classification.

I've seen several Hemi swapped Jeeps in Kingman. If I was ever going to get a Jeep, I would be looking for one with a blown engine or one that's already been swapped. What a great trail rig 400 reliable HP would make.

Or just buy one with a hemi from the factory. They also fixed the Jk axle problems. I bought my wife a 21 392 4 door JL rubicon last year when I sold the lj. 475 hp factory. 0-60 in 4 seconds. Factory 4.45 gears and 35s. Steel bumpers. Every bit as capable as my Ranger and a hoot to drive. I don’t love the awd, but it has a taser and I turn off awd all summer. I got a good deal on it out of state and sold my lj right so it made sense.

The Viper V10 fits. This Jeep needs, 500 cid, 500 hp and 500+ tq. I seriously wouldn't spend money fixing the 3.6. We could have a motor swap party at the BKennedy ranch in Kingman.

I have a 2014 wrangler w the 3.6
Only 36k miles

Continuously has issues with drivetrain control modules communicating …
First it was the wireless start system then the abs pump and now the tire pressure
Monitor system won’t cooperate. I fear even with a hemi upgrade those won’t solve the real issues, which is the electrical side of things.

The wireless start issue was solved at the dealership.. $300 to reset the pcm. Then 6 months later starter making terrible noise.. replaced it. Then the abs module quit communicating, the dealer had Jeep for 90 days could not fix it turns out could not even get the parts… I found a used abs module in Texas for $900 and installed it myself… now the tire module won’t talk to the Jeep, took it to the dealer to have one sensor changed because 3 were working, came back to me with 1 working and 3 broken… they only charged me for the part.

I built a ranger to replace the jeep
And now we are detailing it and selling it
I am going to take it to a local tire shop see if they can fix the tpms if not I will get a obd2 dongle that dosables it so I can sell the jeep “trouble free”

I hate the jk. They are famous for burning oil like a rotary motor. The factory front axles bend if you look at them wrong. And the electrical gremlins. They are like the modern yj- yuppie jeep. I love the Cj, absolutely love the Tj. Yj is meh. I feel the same about the jk.

Dealership is going to install a new 3.6l V6 for now. They have the engine in stock and should be done in a week or two. There is also a 3 year, 100k mile warranty with the engine. They will be installing a new engine oil cooler (plastic POS) and water pump along with other misc parts.

In looking at what a Hemi swap would cost and timeline, it's not going to happen at this time.

There is only 1 vendor who has a CARB EO for the Hemi swap, and it's for the 5.7L with a 8 speed auto. Their website says you have to arrange an appointment to just *call* them and order.

Cost is also way more than the 3.6L engine replacement since it's not just engine but also transmission, harness, cooling fan, radiator, power steering pump, and other minor things.

So to do the hemi swap means planning and collecting things together.

Look for the OBD Jscan application. It's for chrysler/dodge/jeep vehicles, like Forscan is for Fords..

The JL/JT's put them to shame. One youtube channel chased electrical gremlins for years, only to find out it was a nick in the wiring harness in the rear of the vehicle messing up the CANbus. There's one part behind the dash that has a tendency to die and screw with badly with the CANbus. Everything is CANbus based in the JL/JT.

California strikes again.
