Im about to change the oil again on my sohc and just remembered how much it sucks. I've never had a vehicle where the oil drains directly on the frame and spills everywhere. What does everybody do about this?

ahh, its not bad. i spill 2 drops and im in and out in 10-15mins at the most.

take a piece of cardboard and fold it in half(long ways) and place it behind the oil filter running to the drain pan you are using. works great and takes the mess away :)

yes i absolutly hated that about my Sohc, oil all over the lower control arm and torsion bar.
do what Xplorer92 said or i used to use a 2L pop bottle cut in half

A funnel with a flexable down tube works wonders. Like 5 bucks at wally world.

I've folded cardboard, cut up pop bottles, used funnels and even made a nice cutom piece out of some heat moldable plastic.

Just get inventive and find something that works.

you can always use my method change oil make mess spray garage floor with rubbing alcohol take shower move truck mop floor

You can also use the Fumoto method...

http://fumotousa.com/

No need for oil spillage or messy changes...I use them on every vehicle I have owned since 1995...And if you get the valve with a nipple you can use a hose on it to direct the oil flow into any container...

Aluminum foil works good and stays in place too.

I believe there is a newer aftermarket oil pan that has the drain located so it doesn't do this anymore. I'll try to find a link to it...

just change it cold.. takes longer to drain out but it don't fly across the car, or slight warm, def not a full operating temp.

Who the hell changes their oil at full operating temperature? Wtf?

I use my retired Beer Bong. I'm not sure further explanation is necessary...

As funny as it sounds.. it really does work well...

it isn't so bad, do an oil change on an Explorer with a Trailmaster skid plate and Superlift drop brackets,,

that sucks,,,,

Using the Fumoto valve...

I never get dirty nor do I get hands hot... The lever only gets mildly warm even after driving 200+ miles and I drive it up on my ramps and move the lever to drain, baby, drain...I have even drained the engine and tranny into seperate containers at the same time!!! 5 quarts of engine oil and 6 quarts of tranny fluid removed at the same time with just enough time to get tools to drop the tranny pan and change its filter...The tranny fluid really flows out of the tranny when it is hot...

I usually change it within 5 minutes of shutting off the vehicle.
quick enough hands and you only get slightly warm.

I couldn't subject my beer bong to that! but it hasn't been retired yet.

The OEM Ford oil pan was superseded in (I think) 2000 or 2001. The difference between the two is significant. The angle of the plug is now more downward and angled slightly more to the rear to completely miss the lower control arm bolt. if my memory serves, the new pan is about $40 and takes about 10 minutes to replace (less with an air ratchet).

(Flickr won't let me post the images anymore... dangit!!)
