Oil Filter Relocation Kit

I'm thinking of a Perma-Cool Universal type. Will be a short run from the original location, to a reasonably safe looking spot near the radiator. I have an oil filter cooler collar, and some tough loom to cover the oil lines for a little extra protection.

Anyone have any experience, or advice with these?

Yes, dont use the perma cool universal type. The cheapo aluminum ones do not seal to the engine well and have been known to leak.

Now you can use the perma cool filter mount, lines, clamps, etc, but when it comes to the part that attaches to the block, skip any of the cheapo pock metal looking units.

I did alot of research on this before I did it for my conversion, I found a company called Canton makes a billet 360 degree rotatable billet alluminum elbow for the block that does not leak. It's $60 shipped to your door. then you just need to pick up the filter mount you want to use, 1/2" npt to 5/8" pipe fittings and hose.

I chose to use the Perma Cool Ford FL-1a filter mount with 4 way inlet and outlet. This will allow me to install my mechanical oil pressure gage right at the filter, and simply plug up the un-used port on the perma cool mount. I also picked up blue silicoln high pressure oil 5/8" hose, its not cheap but it will never need to be replaced, I got everything except for the Canton adapter at a local speed shop for about $50.

Thanks for the info. I will check out the other types. A leak will really suck. I am using teflon paste on the threaded fittings as I read it is usually a better seal than the tape.

I also am going to put an electrical oil pressure and oil temp guage inline on t-fitttings. I will keep this thread updated.

The instructions that come with the Perma cool say to use teflon tape on tappered pipe threads only, and to use nothing on the non tappered pipe threads.

I am liking those Locktight bottles though, I just ran out last night of my blue thread lock...
 






This is great stuff for thread sealing, but very hard to find.
 






Oil filter relocate install complete

Well it's in. I went ahead and put it all in. My first location, left side, on frame near wheel well was a no-go, Bends in hose were too tight. So I put it on the right side, same location. 2 inches of clearance with wheels turned all the way to the left. Looks okay. Used the teflon paste; couldn't find Loc-Tite. No leaks at all, so far anyway. Got the oil pressure sender/t-fitting in. Options were limited on that, so it is near the trans lines on the lower area of the radiator. Not the best spot, if it ever gets knocked off, I'm in trouble. All the oil hose is tucked up and looks pretty safe. Engine does not seem to notice any difference. PSI 25-80. Used an EQUUS Gage. These are really nice looking gauges. If anyone wants pics, put your email in a reply. So I hope this all stays leak and trouble free !!

You mounted the filter where it will get hit from debris off the tire?

It is mounted on the frame, between the sway bar, and the trans oil lines that go to the trans oil cooler, horizonally, and facing toward the wheel at angle. I have a cooler collar, and I am also making a stainless L-Bracket for protection. The frame mounted brush guard, is directly in front of it. So, even with all this stuff I have around it, It is possible that something could hit it, but I think it should be okay. I really couldn't find any other place for it. The oil lines for it are tucked up behind the lower fan shroud, and I have some underground telephone company loom over those, and that's some tough stuff. I would think they are still somewhat vulnerable, but should be okay. The offroading I do is on the Jersey beaches, so there's not a danger there. The scenario I fear is obviously the road debris on the highway. But it is so far forward, I thought that more to the rear of the vehicle would make it more vulnerable. Too far up, and a fender bender could damage it. Sorry for the novel here, but I think its good stuff for anyone thinking about one of these. I have pics, but I my USB cable is missing. So I will get them in here soon!

Cool I want to see the pics :) It took me about an hour and a half to find te perfect spot for mine, it required me to re-locate my ARB compressor, which was ALOT of work :)

Al, was your oil filter relocation part of your quest for better mileage? Either way, what are your reasons for doing so? Are there better filters available for these relocation kits? I guess they help your oil run cooler. What other benefits do they provide? Did it (better mileage) work? Do you have any pics? Thanx,

Mine is relocated to be able to use the Amsoil bypass filter kit. Mileage is not a factor here, however, the outstanding protection of bypass filtration helps with motor longevity.

Any off roaders mount one of these? If so, where? Is it in a safe place? Thanx
 






best place I have found, but it depends on your engine (what side the filter is on) is on the radiator support, next to the pass side headlight, inside the frame (not on the wheel side)

this is the best spot for me because it is up high, protected by the bumper and radiator support, it also will get hit by air from the fan (a little).

I have heard that you want to keep the hoses as short as possible and the filter down as low as the mount on the block, but then I have also been told it doesnt matter. :)

So you decide! Finding a spot for mine took hours! I couldnt make up my mind.
Now I will ahve to loosen 2 bolts for the fender skirt when I change my oil, but thats allright with me, its protected from the elements there. I will get pics shortly.....

yeah it wasn't easy to find a good spot. initially i was going to put it on the other side, but the bend in the hoses was too tight. woulda been an 8-10 inch run....so i its now about a 3 foot run to the other side where i ended up putting it. 2 other things of concern with the perma cool is that the hose seems a tad narrow, and the hose clamps.... Seem a little chincy. I may double up the clamps. And eventually If I stick with this relocation deal, I may upgrade to a kit with the steel hoses..But so far no problems. And the real oil pressure guage I put inline sure is nice to see, instead of the dummy oil gage. i should post a pic of my pillar gage cluster. people either love it or hate it. it looks unique thats for sure.

***FORGOT TO MENTION*** Check your brass fittings with these gage kits. while I was putting it all together, one of the blue wire crimp connectors included in the packaging was lodged inside the t-fitting. had I not seen that, I would have that thing partially blocking the oil passage***
