yes, smack the dash and it should jump up. That means it's not a real pressure problem.

re

lots of people have this. listen to the engine. if it sounds fine, your pressure switch probably went bad. no oil pressures gonna be obvious :) mine went 2 years ago

mine usually jumps up when i hit a speed bump

thanks

thanks for replys on oil pressure gauge put my mind at rest

yes mine does this at start up also, does anyone know where the switch is on a 2001 4.0 I would like to change it.

The oil pressure switch is on the front drivers side of the block. It is kind of hard to get to, it is under the a/c compressor. The easiest way to get to it is to take off the drivers side front wheel and go in through the wheel well.

yes mine just started doin that so i changed the oil and now will have to see if it does it again. might be a oil pres sender problem

Mine has been doing this as well lately.
I wasn't that worried about it because, as said, the engine seemed to be running just fine. When the engine warms up a bit, the gauge acts normally... I'm glad I did a search on this though- puts my mind at ease a bit.
Would the outside temperature have much to do with this? It's been as cold as -15 to -20 degrees Celsius lately (That's about 0 degrees Farenheit.) Although today is much warmer, above freezing...

I'm not positive that there was a correlation, but I recently had to replace an engine that was doing this. On cold mornings it would take my oil pressure a few seconds to move over into normal. Occasionally it would even go to normal, and then back to low, and then back to normal again. The first time it happened I immediately shut off the engine and changed the oil and filter. This fixed the problem for a few days, but it eventually came back.

This happened for about 2 weeks. Turned out, my cam tensioner was wearing out and dropping pieces of plastic into the oil pan. This was most likely clogging up my oil filter and causing the low pressure sometimes when the engine was cold. Eventually my timing chain slipped a tooth and cooked my valves. Of course I didn't know any of this until after the fact. Lesson learned. :(

Mine has been doing the same. No oil pressure, then the switch jumps to a fine oil pressure. Does it most cold mornings.

It is the oil pressure sending unit. It is located on the drivers side lower end of the block. It is the piece that has a wire coming out of it, and you will need a deep well socket to remove and replace. Its pretty easy, especially with a lift. If you don't have access to a lift, remove the drivers side front tire, and the rubber inner fender that is affixed with the Christmas tree pins. Be careful with the inner fender...it does rip pretty easily. One you have done that...make sure the vehicle is on jack stands, as you may need to be under the vehicle to get a really good push on the unit. Just remove and replace....pretty easy, and a cheap fix. I paid about $15 for the sensor, and within an hour it was on...including tool and hand cleanup. Good luck.:us:
