Oil sending unit location

I'm getting ready to change the oil sending unit in my 2000 explorer. Where would I find it and is it something that someone with only moderate mechanical skills can do? Thanks

It might help if we knew what engine you had in yours. I can't say for sure on yours, but they are easy to change on any I have done. Just remove the wire and unscrew the old one. Reverse procedure to install.

I believe it's towards the front of the motor, on the driver's side, up about 1/2 way on the motor. It's tough to locate without a good light. I think that I had to search around from the top with a drop light to get the proper angle to see the dang thing. It's best found using daylight with the garage door open. I guess that I'm saying it's rather well-hidden!

Once located, I worked from underneath--it IS difficult to get your arms up in there to work, but it's a fairly easy job once you can see what you're working on. I recall having to look again & again from the top to find it from underneath.

Ok, yeah....he is correct. Its a little hard to find, but it right where he said. You need to find the correct socket/wrench to fit the new one before you try to remove the old one. Just makes it easier to do that way. A lot easier than trying a dozen different tools until you find the right one.

Also do NOT OVER TIGHTEN it when you put it back in, it is a tappered thread and will crack the engine block.

Thanks, sounds like it will be a chore. 410Fortune, i'm replacing it because when my wife starts it up in the morning, for the first minute or so, the oil gauge reads no pressure. I've been told to start with the sending unit. Does this sound right to you guys?

There is an updated oil pressure sending unit for that problem. It's relatively easy to get at if you remove the left front wheel and go through the fender. It's right under the power steering pump, assuming that you have the SOHC motor.

That's a reasonable place to start. My oil gauge was fluttering (but not that bad), so I replaced the sending unit. It was rather inexpensive, and solved the problem.

I never thought to take the front driver's side tire off, but that would probably help a lot. In any case, finding the unit is the problem---once found, it's not much off a jo

Overtigtening? If I recall, the unit screws INTO a short extension out of the block, so if you strip the unit, you will then have to get the short extension replaced too.
