and you can kiss any kind of gas mileage good-bye

this is gonna be a off road only machine :) and i got the time to do it so if thats whats gonna be a pain in the ass then forget it cause i got the ranger for now so i wanta play with my rig is is possible though well anythings possible if you put your mind to it so how much work is realy involved

ever thought of a V8 swap?

V8 swap is your best bet since your already going through the work.

You will want to keep the FI if possible becuase on steep inclines or declines you will loose fuel in the carb

ya but the thing is a got another 4.0 i can just drop in it but i was talking to a guy about gettin rid of the sensors and comp and he said he just did it to his Chevy pick up and its 9? and he said i can do it to mine take everything out and just run the basic wires to run it i just gotta turn it from FI to carb

i'd stick with FI if i were you.

there has to be somone else out there with the same idea or close to it ok well then if i stay FI then what all can i do to the 4.0 to make it have more power since im gonna have the engine out anyway

Id say this guy you talked to doesnt know what he is doing if he converted a 9? to run on a carb. There is a reason why all the auto mfg's went to FI - More efficent - Fuel is evenly delivered to all cylinders - Plus you can acheive much higer fuel pressure, which is needed for forced induction if you go that way

If you keep the 4.0 you can build up all the internals, or even bore it out 30 over. On top of that you can add the usuall bolt ons.

FI is much more reliable offroad...keep it. More power out of a 4.0: chip, intake, exhaust. If your going to have it out of the truck then i would also start looking at cams, possibly bore it out (not much to bore out but can be done) or a supercharger. The 4.0 is a great offroad engine though!

in theory, yes you can.

You would need a custom upper/lower intake made....that's going to cost some major $$$.

Also if you want to ditch the computer you will also have to find a way to make a distributor work instead of the distributorless ignition like your truck has now.

All in all, a lot more work than you might be willing to do so that things can be "simple."

If you're just putting in another 4.0 that is much easier because you just plug in the wires and sensors and harnesses....you don't have to "re-engineer" everything like going carburated or do a lot of extra wiring like with a swap.

Edit - I was wrong so I deleted my post

carb'd 302 if you are going to go carb'd. The 302 swap isnt really all that difficult.

ok well i just bought another explorer im gonna try to fix it. 400 bucks
and the tranny wont shift forward anyone

broken band? blown seal? You had better search the site or ask that question in the tranny forum. If there still is a tranny forum, I can't remember.
