On the road problem NOW!

Greetings and Happy Thanksgiving to All. I own a 2001 Ford Explorer, 89,000miles. Today while I was driving out to the country today to visit mom for the holiday my Explorer started making what sounds like a loud exaust leak from under the hood. There was no apperrant problems with the tail, exaust pipe or muffler. Also, there were no dashboard lights on nor did any of the gauges indicate that there was any trouble. The vehicle did not smoke or loose power.

If anyone knows what this is and if it can be fixed, I would appreciate the info. I need to get back home. ASAP.

Welcome & Happy Thanksgiving. Sorry to hear having issues today. I am gonna take a stab at it and guess that since you have an Explorer XLS it is a 4.0L? It is possible that you have a y-pipe flange that is broken or a manifold gasket that is on its way out. Either of these will not cause any issue other than a possible irritating noise and possible lower gas mileage. But just to be on the safe side you should check fluids and get it fixed when you can (you don't want to be inhaling exhaust)

Welcome to this forum! Check the intake tubing to see if one of the connections is loose or not plugged completely in.

As long as you're not getting any lights, losing fluids, overheating, or hearing the sounds of mechanical failure (clanking, banging, grinding). I would ignore it till you get to a safe haven again. Other than a loss of power and loud noise I'm not aware of any major problems an exhaust leak would cause in the short term. Also, you should edit your original post and remove your phone number. That's not something you'd want to leave on the open net.

ON the driver side exhaust manifold ( passenger side if v8 ) you will see an egr pipe which runs up to the intake manifold. Before it gets there there are 2 rubber hoses attached to it going to the dpfe sensor
Check if these hoses are blown--if not, check the sensor by removing it and look for the back to be melted.
