So i was out playing around in my explorer tonight and i am moving ataround 10 mph approaching a hill and i am going up and my rear right tire starts spinning, ok i thought i will switch it into four wheel. After i switched it into 4 wheel the same thing happened but with the left front and right rear. So i ho to back down and i hear the frame scrape, ut-oh i thought. I finaaly back down and get a 25 mph run at it and make it up. So i go to look at bigger tires but i dont think i can go much bigger than the 235's that are on there right now because i would not have any torque. i dont know what to do. Keep thrashing the x as is or spend the grand on gears and a another 200 on a limited slip. i am planning on do a the 2 inch skyjack spring up front and maybe shackles in the back. lmk your opinions. Any help is appreciated.

thanks-
Chris

Try climbing a mountain 5% to 6% grade....and keep up w/ traffic. Even w/ very little in the vehicle, it's tough to go 55 MPH.

I suspect it's more a, "lack of HP problem."

Aloha, Mark

Bwahahahaha...yeah..open 3.27's do suck. Even with stock tires. You can go 31's without a tremendous amount of torque loss, but there will be some. Easiest way to fix it is to find someone selling axles already geared, and put a lunchbox locker in the rear (Powertrax, Aussie, etc). I bought both axles already geared w/ 4.56's for about $600 and spent another $250 for a used powertrax.

could i use a ranger 7.5 rear end? yea i am thinking of trying to find a pair of axles with some like 4.11 or 4.56's.

I beleive that rangers have a narrower axle than us. It would be silly to downgrade to a 7.5 anyway. Keep an eye out you'll find an 8.8 that'll fit your needs, i'd be looking at the 2nd gens so you could get disk brakes while your at it.

You'll never find a d35 and 8.8 stock with 4.56's....maybe 4.10 but they're rare

I have 3.27's, with 31"s and a worn out ls...not the greatest but you can work with them, just gotta be alittle more agressive with the skinny pedal sometimes :D

You can swap in a 3.73 rear axle and front pumpkin. They are fairly common. If you use a gen II rear axle they come with disc brakes, so you can do a rear break upgrade as well. If you find an open differential you can stick a lunch box locker during the swap.

Keep an eye out in the for sale section. There are axles for sale from people doing Solid axle swaps that pop up around hear. The biggest concern i would have would be your tranny bieng under a load all the time. We dont want that thing to go "Boom!".

so 3.27s with 31's will do alright? if i kept the 3.27's and put limited slips in front and rear how would that work?

I have 3.27's & 31's & HP mods & it still sucks. Once up to speed it's ok, but stoplight to stop light is a killer. Also HW with a headwind, trying to keep up at 70MPH. 4th gear is useless. Passing is useless as well.

I have a front pumpkin with 4.56 gears installed that I would be willing to part with for $200, you pay shipping. It had a locker in it, but I took it out because I was popping hubs and shafts rockcrawling with it.

if i ran 30's with limited slips would it be alright? or would it look awkward with the 2 inch lift?

Maybe it's the auto tranny that's the difference. With my manual I could chirp my tires from a stop. I've ran them, on and offroad with fine results. The only times I wish i had more is in steep hill situations...then i can deffinilty see the need for a lower gear.

i have an auto tranny, and i think 30's should be alright but i dont know

i ran open 3.08's with 31's and it fry'ed my tranny. lol....
