i would like to hear some opinions on bosch +4 plugs, jet chips, k+n filters (just the filter not the intake), and aftermarket MAFs. just curious in case i want to put them in my 03 V8

1) i've heard members who say the +4s can cause rough idling and other problems. I stick with Motorcraft plugs and they work well.

2) JET products suck. get superchip or diablo.

3) Never had a problem with KN products, and they do help.

4) Most mildly modded motors don't need or benefit from an aftermarket MAS.

I dont know what all the problems with the Bosch +4's are. I have run them in my 2.9l, my 4.0L, a 87 CRX, and a 98 Jeep 4.0L. They run awesome and last forever! They give a noticable boost in performance and gas mileage. I'm hooked on them.

I used to run NGK platinum in everything, they work real well too.

Alec is right, nothing good has EVER come from any Jet product. as for plugs, sorry guys, but a spark can only arc across one electrode. if your gettin' an 03, you wont need plugs for a long time, anyway. take the money you want to use on the MAF sensor, and use it on exhaust. K&N will proly do you no good with the stock airbox, but get one anyway. they are worth it if not for any other reason than to have a permanent filter. Diablo makes good stuff, and so does superchip.

I had a JEt chip I got used with my auto computer, wasnt too bad, better then stock, but I am going to order a diablo someday.

Maybe the arc can only go to one electrode, but an old trick to get more spark was to grind the elctrode back so it doesnt cover up the tip of the plug, leaving it exposed to the entire combustion chamber, thus burning more faster (allbeit only a little more and a little faster) but it works. Install some and you will see for yourself, they work. Pay close attention to the gas mileage and idle.

Theory this, theory that, they work, enough to make a seat of the pants noticable difference, I'm not crazy. :)

Oh Brett like's em too if that counts for anything????

I have seen excellent results with +4's also.

An aftermarket MAF such as Granetelli can be a good investment.

I think I would go with a KKM intake and a custom cat back first followed by a Diablo Delta chip.

Good luck and have FUN doing whatever you do....

Hey allright!!! +4's with + feedback!

Yes I also like My Granatelli 70mm MAS

Taylor Spiro 8mm wires were good for $35

kkm or FIPK first for sure, if not do a K&N drop in at least

Custom cat back is a must

remove the stupid air silencer from the intake

Run synth oil in the engine and synth lube int he rear diff.

The use of synthetic fluids will make a difference; a wise investment.

don't bother with the bosch +4's not enough gain for the price you pay....and if you do grind back the electrodes and try to get more spark from those plugs (like the splitfire) all you're gonna do is heat up your cylinders, dry out your cylinder and if you're really lucky that will lead to a scorched cylinder. use the motorcraft double platinums ford didn't spend all that money on research for nothing! k+n is a real good idea, from what i've read going to a 70mm MAF is pretty much worthless because of the plastic pieces that run down the center they cause enough of an incumbrance that is about the same as the stock MAF. i'd go with a superchip and get a catback exhaust.

Deagle, teh +4's are the same price as the Moto's, the price has dropped on the +4's a bunch.

Also the MAS does more then just allow a bigger opening for more air, it also samples more often and the computer adjusts fuel/air more often.

I would never suggest modifying a plug like that, unless you are racing the car/boat/dirt bike whatever. sorry if it sounded like I was, thats just where the idea of the +4 comes from.

My Granatelli has nothing running down the middle, it is open except for the sample tube (it;s nothing more then a stock Mustang unit re-calibrated for the 4.0 injectors and programmed to be more accurate)

Superchips are good, Diablo's are slightly better, or so I hear.

Cat back and intake are first no matter what. Your engine is an air pump, the more air you can pump (remove factory restrictions) the more poweer you are going to make, it;s that simple. Also the cooler the air entering the combustion chamber the better.

Beagle? i hope that was a typo. all i'm sayin is that anything more than one electrode is just a gimmic.

I know, I know a gimmik. Yes sorry I am a lousy typer when I;m in a rush and it;s not getting published. No disrespect meant.

I'm just saying that when I bolted in a set of the +4's I could tell a seat of the pants difference in the amount of throttle response and gas mileage, and my old plugs were new. Dont forget I dont mind spending extra on my baby, I;m an **** idiot when it comes to maintnenece on my baby, I can justify spending any amount of $$$ on her, because I love her, and I havent had to buy anything new for 6 years now because of her. So they are not for everybody, but I have had such a good experience with them in all the vehicles we have owned that I like to give them props and suggest others use them.

Hell I can plop 3 sets of plugs in my 4.0L a year, just to try new gimmiks, if they work, i;s justified. I;m in there anyways putting dieelectric grease on my wire boots anyways, so that gives you an idea of how much I am under my hood, so much I installed soft Yakima pads on my front bumper so it doesnt hurt my knee's any more. :)

Have a good holiday dude!!
fixing typ-o

I got my 4+ because of Brett. LOL He was having the same rough idle I was having he put them in and it fixed it. So I tried the same thing and it also fixed my rough idle.

Hey 410, not sure about the sampling thing man. The way the MAF works is it sends a constant signal to the computer in the range of about .6 to 4 volts all the time. I doesn't actually send "groups" of signals to the computer. I think the only benefit you would get from a larger MAF is more air flow. And then it would only matter if you had an aftermarket throttle body as well.

The Granatellu MAF works like....Mass air induction systems measure airflow directly with an electronic "hot-wire" type sensor. The sensing element in the air intake provides an output voltage reading that is directly proportional to the amount of air that is entering the engine. This method of airflow measurement reduces the calculations required to control fuel flow and ignition spark advance. The sensor can react fast and accurately to the sudden changes in airflow while improving overall vehicle performance and drivability

When I hooked a voltmeter to my stock MAF and drove around with it, the MAF immediately responded to throttle input.

Al, what you just posted describes exactly how the stock MAF works.

What Jason 25 says. The Granatelli works exactly like the stock MAS. Exactly. Granatelli claims their unit is just more precise and has less resistance to airflow.

The Gran MAS has a much larger diameter tube, and also it has no screen like the stock MAS does. A lot of modders like to remove the screen from their stock MAS housing, in an attempt to remove this seeming restriction. There is a thread here about removing the screen...fyi

Oh yeah, and that technique of shaving off part of the spark plug electrodes is called "side gapping" and really should only be done on a racing engine. It can really shorten the life of the engine. I don't know if +4's were being equated to side gapped plugs--if so then there's no comparison, a Bosch +4 is not in any way like a side gapped plug. They're a little safer :)
