Hello, Im sorry my first post is a question, but I have my 06 EB Exp. at the dealership with overheating problems. Its a V8 2wheel drive, and yes, I have had the hose and hose clamp problem fixed.
The dealership is saying they have; Flushed the coolent system, changed fan clutch, changed the thermostate, and now they are talking about changing the sensors........... They did a lazer check of the temperture at the engine and the temp was fine. A guy where I work said it could be a gauge problem and also to post my problem on this forum to read if anyone else has had this problem and how was it fixed?
thanks for all of the help and advise in advance,,,,,,Larry J.

How do you know it is overheating, the guage of the performance? Is the engine sluggish or runnig poorly when the temp rises? If not and the IR temp guage says it is ok I would guess you either have a bad temp guage or sending unit.

2006 explorer overheating

the vehicle runs good, but the air cond will begin to blow hot air at idle then the indicater light will come on. Otherwise the motor runs good.....they are giving me the runaround at the dealership on this and im beginning to get pissed off.....thanks for the info another person also said the sending unit or gauge....Larry.

When your motor starts to overheat the first thing it does is protect itself by turning off any extra load, starting with the A/C. Does this happen when at a light under the blaring sun? Could be a defective therestat and after a while your entire cooling system could be heat soaking. Well maybe not, if it was defective it prob would not open and you would quickly over heat.

Those lazer checks are junk. Ive checked MANY times with a lazer checker and it always reads about 40* lower.

This is the reason I ALWAYS install an aftermarket water temp gauge. You can't count on the factory gauges, they have a variance of about 60* + or - before the damb needle starts to move. My external temp guage can show overheating and the damb stock needle stays in the middle for some time.

Get a quality digital water temp gauge. I had a mechanical one but it was always behind as well, digital for temps, and mechanical for boost and presures.

Let us know when you find the problem.

Heres a thread I posted when comparing my mechanical to digital gauge.

I was looking at the picture in that link about adding a sending unit inline with the heater core hose:
senderguage.jpg

Why is this more accurate than the location of the sending unit on the engine? Is the tee made out of a galvanized plumbing fitting? The sending unit is brass. Sometimes dissimilar metals interact, and build up corrosion. Maybe a brass tee would be better? I know that the engine is iron, and some parts of the cooling system are aluminum. The stock sensor is also brass.

If they're giving you the run around, drive it until she pops. You have it documented that it was "fixed".

Its not more accurate than the stock sending unit. Its right at par with the stock location. You can see by my comparisons on the thread. That location is basically dead on with the stock sending units reading. What I mean is that the stock GAUGE (or maybe its the sender) is programmed not to show the end user the real life variance of the differences in temp changes, manufactures supposedly do this to avoid people from freaking out. The motor can be at 240* and you can see it on a data logger, digital gauge or mechanical aftermarket gauge, and the stock needle will stay in the middle.

My tee is all brass. Its just painted.

And my motor is all aluminum its not iron. All 3rd gen v8 X's have all aluminum motors.

Thanks for explaining this to me.

No prob. Thanks for pointing all that out, just makes everything easier to understand now ;)

overheating....

the dealership still has my vehicle. The air conditioning doesnt turn off on the road at speed, only when at idle for a period of time, and they have replaced the thermostate and all cooling sensors. Tomorrow they are sending an engineer to inspect the vehicle. The shop forman said there was one other Explorier like mine that did the same thing and they are trying to find out more info, but this is really pissing me off since the vehicle only has 5k miles...........thanks for all of your replies, Larry.

yeah sounds like your heating up at when sitting for a while, maybe a fan problem. another way to test if your really heating up is to squeeze the big radiator hose up front. when you know your at a normal operating temp squeeze it, once you feel its overheating, squeeze it again, if its a lot harder to squeeze then you know your coolent is heating up.

Every once in a while using the a/c and pulling away from a stop occasionally i will hear my engine fan being MUCH louder and then goes away (only a couple seconds) but something i have noticed on my V8 EB.... hope that is normal but like i said it's rare, but noticable "roar".

Wouldn't the AC turn off if a faulty sensor or sending unit said the engine was hot (even if it wasn't)? If so, maybe you're running fine, just do have a bad sensor. I'd imagine that laser heat testers are made of varying qualities. I'd think that the dealer would have a good one. Good luck...

Sorry, just re-read. You had sensors replaced. Well, best of luck any way! Keep us informed.

Any updates?
