2006 Eddie Bauer Explorer Overheating?

Any update or more info on this? I have a 2006 V8 with the same problem and the shop can't figure it out. (no radiator leak) Very intermittent roaring noise when I start from a dead stop and accompanying temp spike. I can shut it off and wait two minutes and all is fine.
I am going to send them the post on the fan clutch but I saw one post that it was the Thermo bypass.

Have they checked the thermostat yet for proper function? It is possible that it is sticking closed when it should not be.

That's what mine did with a worn out thermostat. 10 minutes, very basic tools and skills, and about $13 for a new thermostat from my local Ford dealer and it was fixed. Get a 195* thermostat not a 180*. The 195 is what it comes with and is what you will get from a Ford dealership, aftermarket places offer both 180 and 195. The engine needs to reach 192ish to cook the condensation and other stuff out of the oil. Its better for the engine.

Wellthe shop said they checked it but that sounds like a lot better thing to try first than a possible intermittent fan clutch problem. I'll let you know.
Thanks.

If you have a 4.6 it might be the thermostat. Had the same problem with my 06 mountaineer and problem went away after replacing the thermostat

Thanks and so far you are right. Not sure why the shop took so long to get to that diagnosis. But finally they changed the t'sat and so far so good.
I guess it was just a very intermittent failure.

It has been my experience, with these relatively high pressure systems on the Fords, that when the T stat wears out it can fluctuate from open to closed and typically happens when the water pump is not spinning very fast.

2005 Eddie Baurer Overheating

I have the same problem with overheating when in stop and go traffic (engine idling), and than the loud roar when you drive off. Appears that the fan is not providing the needed cooling when at idle speed, although it is turning at the speed of the engine, and when I take off, the fan is roaring at the rpm speed of the engine. My guess is it is the fan clutch (about $230), however I am taking it to my mechanic later this week to verify before I spend that much money.

I seem to be having the fan roaring problem, but the temp gauge never goes beyond the normal temp. Kind of odd. I do have a leaking radiator, but it's been refilled to the correct level so I'm not sure what's happening.

My radiator fan was roaring like 747 but was not overheating. Replaced the fan clutch assembly with OEM part and it's good for the past 2 years.

Awesome, thanks.

I too have an overheat issue on my 06 V8. Normal temp till you turn on the A/C. Temp goes up, A/C off temp goes down, fan kicks in hard when temp goes up. I have the electronic fan clutch as well. Could I replace it with a non electric one?

I just had a similar problem recently. I changed the thermostat, that fixed the overheating. I also had a leak and had to replace the whole thermostat housing but that was pretty easy. But I guess the first step will be to make sure you have enough antifreeze in the car.

Just wanted to note that I changed the fan clutch assembly and it fixed the problem. It was pretty simple once I got a fan clutch tool set loaner from O' Reilly Auto Parts. The first one I got from Advance Auto Parts was trash (and this is backed up by other peoples reviews). Once again, thanks!

So the fan only kicks in hard when you turn on the A/C? Interesting. Definitely check your coolant level. Does the fan ever make more noise when you accelerate, or does it always seem the same with the A/C on?

Mine has a new radiator water pump and t stat, along with the temp sender. No air in system. Has been fine for months, just started this. Fine as long as we don't turn on a/c. Is there a relay that partially engages the clutch fan to compensate for the a/c condenser heat? If there is I would like to try and change that before I spend A$$ on a new clutch fan.

My fan clutch is always spinning. I think the clean clutches on these are computer controlled, not relay controlled like fans that aren't run off the water pump .

I know I am not the greatest mechanical mind here, I can only go by experiences that I have had. You say the temperature goes up then the fan comes on therefore, if you can keep the temperature down, the fan will not come on. Sounds to me like the fan is not your problem, it is just a symptom of a car that is overheating.

Here's my experience:

Years ago, I had a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it had a slight coolant leak. I used some kind of anti-leak solvent I got from the auto store. That sealed the leak, but it also sealed the thermostat. I had to change thermostats like 3 times before they stopped getting "sealed". No, I didn't flush the coolant. I barely knew what I was doing.

The temp is fine without the a/c on, it only rises when I switch it on

Isn't that a symptom of a bad thermostat?

I know it can be more complicated with the computers in cars these days. But if I ever found myself in an overheating car, I turned off the A/C and turned up the heat to cool it off, until I could get the problem fixed.

I have a 2007 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer - 2WD - just had the radiator replaced because it was leaking - found that after it had a flush at Valvoline. My husband replaced the thermostat and the thermostat housing before that as it was getting hot and we could not see a leak. So after that, we saw the leak and took it to a place down the road where we have had things on it fixed. So the guy calls me and said the radiator has to be replaced and the hose on the bottom too. So he replaced that. He called me back today and said that whoever put the thermostat housing on the top had stripped it. I know my husband did not strip it because he is very careful with things. Are they just trying to rip me off?? And by the way, it was not leaking from the housing when we took it down there.

I don't know for sure but shops always try to make the customer pay for their mistakes.
