I have an 02 explorer and noticed the last few days that it was a little hard to start ONLY when it was hot. Then yesterday while driving down a big hill I noticed the temp gauge bounce a few times and then just drop ( to the cold end) I assumed that I was low on coolant. Checked the reservoir and it was empty. Filled it to the mark and brought truck up to operating temp. Only about an inch worth of coolant was removed from reservoir and car is now exhibiting over heating symptoms. It is harder to start now but again ONLY when hot. When it does start engine idle is raised @ 1100 - 1200 RPM's.
Clutch fan has some resistance so I think it's OK
Can not find any leak in the radiator.
Does not seem to be coolant in the oil.
Upper hose is hot and pressurized.
Gauge still has not moved.

does this sound like a thermostat ?
