P0172 code.

Just signed on, I am a "retired" Ford and Mazda Master Tech that switched professions a few years back after 33 years twisting wrenches. I am trying to locate specific directions on how to properly clean the MAF sensor on my 2004 FFI , 4.0 V-6 Explorer, and it does have a K&N filter which may be the cause of the set code .

K&N filter came heavily oiled out of the origional package, must.ve contaminated the hot wires in the MAF . Cleaned the MAF with NAPA's MAF cleaner yesterday, drove 25+ miles, no code reset as yet. Note: let the MAF sit for three to four hours to neutralize any residual charge that may be left in the unit before cleaned, let dry for 30 minutes before reinstalled. Also note: erase any codes set previous to MAF cleaning , without starting engine .

p0172 is bank 1 running rich im not saying it cant be the maf but that wouldn't that effect both banks normally. if u have a scan tool i would look at the 02s and the fuel trim first.but auto zone does have a cleaner for maf sensors.

Just remembered that I also found a p0175 lurking in the code reader, bank 2 rich also . I have driven only about 30 miles since MAF cleaned, previously the codes set before that many miles before MAF cleaned . May have "lucked out" , didn't want to toss $180 on a new MAF instead of some of the Christmas presents for wife & kids .
