Hi Guys,

Good day to all!

No matter how hard I step on the foot brake of my Ford Explorer 2013, the park brake doesn't lock or engaged at all thus I keep on receiving this error message when driving:

(Please note that I'm 100% sure that the park brake wasn't engaged at all when driving as I can accelerate with ease)

Does any of you encountered an issue with their foot brakes? Is this a major problem on the brake itself or just needs some adjustment on the foot brake? What seems to be the problem?

Just want to know your input guys as Ford Philippines can't schedule me for a service this time due to the holidays. Thanks in advance!

Have you tried lifting or pulling up on the parking brake after it has been released? Perhaps it isn't coming all the way up. That's where I would start.

Peter

Make sure you reset it. press it to lock, then press it again all the way to release.

If that doesn't do it, my guess is a sensor with the pedal.

Hi Peter,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I already tried pulling up or pressing the foot brake all the way down but it just keeps on coming up.

Hi blwnsmoke, I already tried to press it all the way down to lock but it just keeps on getting back up. It doesn't lock at all. Also requested my brother (bigger than me) to step on the foot brake all the way down but same issue.
Thanks for your reply brother.

Parking brake "sensor" is just a switch. It shorts to ground when the brake is applied and is an open circuit when disengaged.

Either switch is bad or you have a cut wire. Could just unplug the switch and see if that helps.

Okay, I see now. The pedal won't stay down. By any chance have to tried pushing it all the way down and keeping your foot on it putting the transmission in 'Drive' to see if it actually works?

I haven't tried this yet Peter, will try it later to see if the Park Brake will work when pressed down in drive mode. Good suggestion. Just worried that this issue is something major as it may be difficult for me to source the parts from US.

Yeah I think the issue has something to do with a wire as the foot brake doesn't lock at all when pressed all the way down. It just keeps on coming back up so that maybe the reason why I keep on getting "Park Brake Engaged" even if it's not.

Iwill check again later if the switch is an easy access. Might be needing a mechanic to do this for me though.

Hey Peter, just want to update you that I tried your suggestion this morning and it works.
I step on the foot brake, put the transmission into Drive mode, I can feel that it was engaged as my Explorer can't move forward.

Hey guys, so I'm having the same problem. How did you get the issue resolved?

Something was stucked up inside the Parking brake assembly so my mechanic did a workaround to fix it. It was just a temporary fix but he advised me to order the whole assembly so they can replace the worn out part.

Hey thanks for posting this. Before reading this I went outside put the explorer slow in reverse and hit the parking brake (not sure where I got this from haha). But anyway it stopped the car. So I grabbed the pedal, yanked it up and now it works; although when it releases it gives a little extra pop towards the end of its release. Probably going to give out soon.

Good to hear that it worked for you..

Does anyone know how they got the nut out of the back of the parking brake assembly the first two on the front are easy but the one extending to the back (front part of the car) are extremely hard to reach. It is a size 13mm, any ideas or hint on how to get to this one?
