my ex has been running like a dog for months now
timing chain packed it in so a new crate motor was installed
3,500 for engine ,1800 to fit it,new radiator,new intake pipe,new oxy sensors,
now due the the new engine having all different intake and injectors and wiring loom my old intake and bits were refited with new o rings and seals.
the engines only been in a few weeks now and the damm thing is still playing up
surging, backfiring out the exaust pipe, now and then it runs fine.
since i got it back from the shop the o /d light is flashing as well, this only happens after about ten mins on the road ,next day you drive it the light is on first thing then goes out after 5 mins then comes back on later
these surging probs have been going on befor the engine was replaced
im at my wits end mechanics gonna run the code reader tomorrow but i have more faith in you guys than the bloke i handed 6 grand to to fix me heap
I THINK MY CAR HAS HIM STUMPED :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:

Your post is really hard to understand...

your timing chain "packed it in"???? What the heck does that mean?

It sounds to me like you need a new mechanic, if he just did a crate motor swap then it should have been a "plug and play" deal with no wiring or anything.

Why a different intake and injectors?

I think that means, that the Timing chain called it day and the engine when bang!!

Thus the new motor
I notice that yours is a XL, I think they only came with the Pushrod V6 in Australia Did they not??

So what engine are you running now?

I suspect the new motor is having some communication problems with the computer, or it was not installed right or the new motor is shifty!!

Without seeing the car it is very hard to diagnose what is happening, I suggest start simple and work you way up. I.E reset the computer, Check all connections and filters + Earth connections. As you say the surging has been going on before the engine was replaced so that makes it a issue with something that was already on the car and has nothing to do with the new motor

hi
xl explorer run the 4.0l sohc as well its just the poverty pack model
new engine is a sohc as well but it is the current model engine with the single piece intake manifold and fly buy wire throttle body
injector set up is different,
fuel rail has no fuel reg, injectors have different conections
basicly everything below the in take is the same as the early sohc
hard thing over here in austrailia is there are no places like autozone, cant buy a code scanner and ford austrailia try and shaft you one up the chutney shute
so im moving back to new zealand ,over there i could stick any damm engine i wanted in it and not worry about being defected lol

im convinced it somthing stupidly simple causing the probs i just dont like throwing money at it with no results

its going back in on friday to havre another go at it and to get the lastest computer updates what ever that means
mechanic is a nice bloke he hasnt charged us for stuffin around with it since the new engine went in
so we will see what happins on friday

thanks guys
muz

The $1800 should buy you a bunch of time to make it right. A bunch of time.

I assume that you have the entire intake up from the old engine, correct? I would be looking hard at the intake gaskets(seals-vacuum leaks), the injectors(how many miles), the regulator, general vacuum line connections, etc. There are tons of things that can cause problems with engine swaps.

Look over everything carefully, a scan tool could help a lot, they aren't uncommon. Start with pulling the PCM error codes. Good luck,

Hay Gixernut, how many kilometres did you get out of the timing chain before it packed it in???

I’m on 122,000 now and am about to do the front tensioner, as I have traced the sound and it appears this is where it is coming from. Mine only has the chain rattle 1 out of every 4 starts at the moment.

hi
the $1800 included fitting ,new intake o rings ,new intake pipe, air filter .etc
timing chain didnt actually break the chain guide collapsed that was at 205,000 kms
but i wouldnt trust it ,it could go anytime and cause a heap of damage.
