Has anyone bought a performance chip off of ebay before? I see some that range from $4 to $50. Which one works the best. Some claim up to 60 hp gained. is this true? some just claim 15hp increase. Whats the difference? Also some say they save 20mpg but others say they dont save any at all? and they all seem to install the same so what is the difference? if you have had one from here, where did you buy it and did it work good? Thanks

Most of the eBay "performance" chips are junk. If it sounds too good to be true, it pry is.

Look elsewhere...

The ones you are describing are a complete waste of money and are basically scams. If you want a true performance "chip" (or tuner), stick with a reputable brand like SCT, Diablosport, Sniper, Banks, etc...

You won't get one of those for under several hundred dollars though...but you will get something that works.

I second that sct is the best imop

You might want to take a look at Sniper...A LOT of the Mach crowd is going to that now and they all (including a bunch of tuners) think that it's the best one out there right now. Personally, I've got a Diablosport Predator, but would get the Sniper if I were to buy again.

Most of those Ebay chips fool sensors and give a false reading, whether it be that the air is a lot colder than it is, more air than you're really getting..ect to make your computer think it needs to push out more fuel.. it's not good for your truck at all.. it may give a gain.. but you'll have a lean issue and possibly worse issues down the road, stay away!

well most of these things say that they "in no way will hurt the engine" makes you wonder how they actually continue to sell these things. you would think ebay would find out and cancel the accounts or something. thanks for the help guys. i was going to get one because they seemed to be so cheap but if the real ones are a couple hundred then this will have to wait a while. quite a while actually. :(

I'll tell ya right now, you'll NEVER be able to get 50+ hp for less than $100.

They probably do give a gain because they fool your engine to run harder than normal, but it's not good. You won't be getting optimum performance, and your mileage will probably go out the window.

I have a buddy who has a Cobra, and he tried something simular that fooled the o2 sensors.. he got a gain, but the car ran like ****.

Kinda like the tornado... lol..

The stickers they send you with the chip give you 40 hp just for putting them on the truck. hahaha

:p:

so how do the real ones change the hp? just curious i guess. :D

i wish i had unlimited money when it comes to my car. :p:

Everyone here will tell you to get a tuner instead of a chip, but they both do pretty much the same thing. The tuner is way more customizable, the chip is a fixed tune.

They'll change you shift points, tune for higher octane gas [premium], change the timing.. and a bunch of other stuff... change your speed limiter..ect

I bought one for my 98 ranger 4.0, it did absolutely nothing at all to the performance. A k&n filter adds more power and its under a c-note. When i bought it, it came with a photo copied instuction sheet, and a small capacitor that you wedge into the sensor connection on your airbox. After i installed it i went through two O2 sensors and a cat. Highly not recommended at all! Like i said, to start off performance mods, start with the basics like air intake and exhaust, its quick, cheap, and actually good for your engine. After that then move up to the more expensive harder core mods like chips, tuners, ect. You'll be alot happier with the results.

thanks for your replys. that was what i was expecting to hear but I was hoping that the $20 chip off ebay was going to be great for my car. I was hoping it was going to be a great buy and add some hp but if it hurts the engine then i am not doing that. o well :p: guess i have to wait for a little while until i save some money.

About 5 years ago me and my best friend had a house with 2 bedrooms, but a 4 stall garage ;) we had a about 7 cars there and we had a little 88 chevy corsica that we tested out alot of these so called "chips" oh and the tornado, and the electronic turbo (vent fan) all with very poor results. The chips threw trouble codes, the electronic turbo sounded like a angry vacuem and made it slower, and the tornado made a whistling noise and lowered MPGs. Do a little reasearch first before buying these i know alot of people actualy beleaved the stuff would work too. As soon as we looked at this stuff in person we knew it was a joke :thumbdwn:

That sounds like a dream house to me. It's a good thing I'm single, since I don't thing to many girls would put up with all of my tools and spare parts sitting in the living room since I don't even have a 1 car garage to put them in:(

I live at home with my parents now after the place i worked for closed :thumbdwn: haha

I have tried several of those chips and done a lot of research on them and the only one on eBay that seems to work is the one sold by Volo Performance Inc. for about $80. I installed one on my "99 F250 LD 5.4L V8 and with regular gas the difference was small but when I went to premium gas the performance jumped.
I am now in the process of installing a VOLO chip on my '07 Explorer 4.6L V8 but this time I am useing their gas mileage chip, don't like the 14mpg I am getting stock. Will post an update when I get some data.
