damnit... i can't find it for the 98....they all say 99 and up....whats the difference between the 98 and 99 that it won't fit?

The grill guard is actually called the WAAG Sportster. Don't think I mentioned this before.

There is a slightly better picture at:

yea i found it a few places online...one website has it for the 98, the others only list it for 99 and up... I emailed waag about it... Do you know if your model will fit on a 98? Are you happy with it so far, as far as looks and quality...?

If you can get it for $98 (about half of list), that's a steal. At that price, even after shipping, you're still about $50 below what I paid. I haven't seen it anywhere for that price.

Don't know if it fits a '98, I have a '99 Sport. You did the right thing to write to WAAG about it. I dealt with Sandi Franco. You can always mention my name. I'm sure she'll remember me.

About the quality. Well, I wrote about my experience (and Matt supplied the link to the picture) in Moab.

haha, sorry to confuse you...98 wasn't the price, but the year...the website that had it had it for like $189 or something. I guess shipping is extra...but it was the only website that listed an application for the 98 model year...

I need to be more careful when I read. Missed the 'the' in front of 98. We had been talking about price, so I 'assumed' and didn't pay attention.

yea.. thats ok..haha if only i could find that price... hopefully waag will get back to me about the guard... i might try calling a few places around here...

I just thought of something else. You (or somebody) mentioned earlier that the lights seemed to be mounted kind of high. I have the driving lights and the postion is just about perfect for that on me grill guard.

Now, if you have the fogs, I wouldn't want them up this high. They're supposed to be mounted low in order to project the light low to avoid reflection in fog. I would mount those upside down to get them lower.

oh...haha yea i just meant that in the original picture that matt put up, they looked higher than they do on a safari bar...so i was wondering what kind of bar you had.. yea I have the driving lights, so I would mount them up high..thanks for the info though... i notice some people mount more than one set of lights on their bars.... do you drill more holes to do this?

Click on 'Explorer Excursions' under my sig. Select 'My Explorer' and click on the last picture (right most). I think you'll see that there isn't enough room for another set of lights, at least not the size of the 520's.

I don't think the Westin Safari bar has enough room for four lights either.
(Take that back. I just checked and it looks like there should be enough room)

hey peter...did you install the bar yourself... im having some trouble...see when i go to mount the brackets to the frame, there is this plastic thing that covers the underside of the air filter...its in the way...what did you do about this?

Yes, I installed the grill bar myself.Took somewhat longer than the half hour the instructions said it should take.

If memory serves correctly, there were some fin like pieces of plastic sticking down on both sides. Used a pair of tin snips to cut out enough to get the space needed to mount the grill bar supports on the frame.

Sorry, I don't remember the exact details. This was close to three month ago and just a minor annoyance. I didn't take pictures of it either.

Ok well i took it to the place i bought it, to see if they were the right brackets and they were, and the guy said he would install it forl ike $10, so I had him do it. I looked at it yesterday and its looking slightly crooked....does yours look straight, or does it just not fit perfectly? its weird.

Mine was straight when I put it on. Since my little encounter with a dirtbank at the bottom of a hill at Moab it seems just slightly crooked (one side closer to the bumber then the other). At least it looks it to me. But then, I use a level when I hang a picture.

Again, if I remember correctly, the holes in the frame and/or the bracket seemed to be oval. So that leaves some room for one side to be out about a 1/4".

If you think your's is not level, it could be an optical illusion. If your bumber is not 100 % straight (level) and the bar is straight, you might think the bar is crooked.

well i put a level on it and it looks like its bent sort of on 1 side... i don't know, i think i wll take it back to the place i got it from today and have them look at it...though they probably won't do anything since i already paid for it and left the store... i just didn't notice it till yesterday that it looks like the left side is lower than the right...
