If you're doing all that work you could put the BW 4405 in or swap in a BW1354 manual.

it has to be a 4405, that is what came in the 96's, now ? time,
was it an Xl, xlt or other ?
that determines which t case.

I don't completely understand what it is that you are asking.
If the 96 was an AWD it was a V8 with the AWD transfercase, and If I am reading this correctly you want to pull out the V8, the transmission and transfercase. Then replace them with a 4.0 and the 5R55E transmission??? Is this right?

The BW1354 will bolt up to the transmission and will be less wiring work so you wouldn't have to wire up a shift motor to the transfer case.

Umm, yeah, lots of confusion here. Might want to start over here.
Lets try to break this down so we can understand your wants, and needs.

Your rig as it sits.
1) What engine is in it? Be specific. 4.0 or 5.0 ?
2) Model of Explorer. Sport or 4 door. (style is irrelevant )
3) Manual transmission or automatic? #?

Your rigs new drive train donor.
4) Engine ?
5) Transmission model # ?

Stock Transfer cases for the Explorer are:
95-96 --4405-ca
97 -----4405-ga w/vss
98-01 --4405-ga w/o vss
All AWD-4404

thx for reply i have a 96 EX awd 5.0-4r70w-4404
eng & trans going in 98 ranger-----ranger 4.0 stuff going in 96 EX
some say manual 1354 ?????????????

Your trans housing will accept a 4406 manual t-case. It is a bear to install, but is a genuine 4x4 t-case. The V-6 transmissions have a different tail housing on them. Your options are really AWD 4404, or a big beefy 4406 manual. This is for your ranger swap.

For the Explorer:
Just make sure you get the proper case with or without VSS for the 4405's.

A 1354 manual can be swapped in also. Takes a bit of doing. Your going to need front end parts for 4x4.

thx for reply, thats for the 5.0 i think i was planing on using the t/c thats in the ranger now with the AA adapter kit if i can figure out 5 or 9 inch
what i need is help to figure out what T/C to use in the 96 EX when i put the 4.0 in it
thx noel

The only t-case I know of that fits on the 4r44e or 5r55e is the 4405, or the 1354. 1354 has to be manual because of the electronics in your 96 will not work with the 1354 E.

I am only guessing here, you did not say which transmission was going behind the 4.0.

Sorry but that's all I have without researching this.
