Mikey I love the way your system looks! Really nice a clean and still tons of room! Especailly the amp rack that's awesome. I've always wanted to do something more custom than just amps on the back of the seats and a prefab box. I like the way your subs look flush up against the rear seats. I dunno if I could do that with mine because my woofers are really deep but you've got me thinking.

Where is your other JL amp located. The one that powers your 4 speakers?

amp locations

has anyone had problems folding the rear seat backs down if you have your amps mounted underneath the seats?

Here is one of my amps, I've yet to have a problem

bigtig-

am i seeing that right? that amp is bolted to the bottom of the seat?? is there any reason why you did that instead of just bolt it to the floor of the car? i figure wiring would be easier that way. it does look pretty cool set up like that though. nice job!

Yes, Its bolted to the bottom of seat. I did it like that so if anybody was back there, I wouldn't have to worry about their feet being all over my amp. Plus the amp is tuck up into the seat so its also protected from things rolling around on the floor and if somebody were to try and steal my system, its impossibile to get to unless you undo seat's bolts and flip it up. Not to mention its out of the way, I’m not losing any valuable space.

Wow, I sound like I’m trying to sell a house. I can take pics of how I did it if any body is interested.

i'm interested... thx!

98greyxlt, here are the pics. I would of posted them on here directly but their resolution is at 1600x1200, so they are a little to big to post on the forum.

bigtig -

nice job... where did you get the aluminum stock that you used under the seat?

I got everthing I needed from my local hardware store.

Great idea, only one problem, the fins on the "top" of the amp are heatsinks, and they are designed to be facing up as heat rises, that way ya have it the heat is just goin back into the amp, I suggest putting a cooling fan cross fin on the amp to disperse the heat, or heres an idea, I have the extra blower in my center console so I diverted the cool air from that outlet to the rear of the truck for amp cooling, try running a small tube (1"-2") from a hole in the duct to the amp location. just a suggestion.

I was concerned about that at first, but I've run it pretty hard for hours at a time, it has never overheated. Plus it is wide open down there so it has plenty of room for it to "breathe".

bigtig,

What happens when you fold the seats down? Is there still some room in there, or does the amp touch the floor?

bigtig-that is sweet! as soon as i get my car back from gettin the tranny rebuilt (and i get a day off from work) im movin my amp. my biggeest concern is heat though, cause with mine mounted on the floor in the same location it would overheat in about 20 minutes of hard playin. but now with the cooling fans on it i have had no problems. i guess i just need to find a way to mount those on the bottom of the seat as well

Yes Kicker is supposed to be coming out with a Alma Gates sub. She is a great lady. Met her at CES one year, when she was still with PPI. That truck is incredible. As far as the L7 go they are not there SPL subs.
The XPL sub are the subs for doing DB drags and stuff like that. They are designed to have a bit more output in the 50-60 hertz range if I remeber.
The solos were desiged for the guy who did not want to give up alot of space. Example I put a 10" L7 in the center consule of a 2001 Rousch Ford F150 crew cab. It had a Xtant 121 on each voice coil. We SPL it and it hit 130. It was more than the guy wanted so we turned the amps down.
If you can give up the room try one of the ported boxes for the L7s
As far as power to a sub goes if a sub reaches it maximum excursion at 200 watts and you feed 500 watts into it all you are doing is converting that extra 300 watts into heat in the voice coil.

but in another post where i told a guy 300 watts RMS for a Kappa Perfect sub was enough, you said it's better to give it more power. now your saying that extra power is just extra heat. which side are you on?

exploreraudio, I can fold the seat down just fine and the amp doesn't touch the floor.

tac0meat, thanks for the kind word, If you run into any problems mounting your amps under the seats, just shoot me an email.

from what i know is that if you push 500 watts in it you will get an higher DB then when you would put 200 in it...

more power will create more heat however the side effect of putting way more power into the speaker then needed is that the voice coil will react faster and more furious on the signal...

it's like putting 24 volt on an 12 volt bulb, it's not ment for it but if you put it on/off fast enough you will see an brighter light then when you would hook it up to an 12 volt source, same goes for woofers.

althoguh you will burn voice coils l heck of alot faster if you steer way more power to the woofer then needed.

It is better to have more power than not enough. When guys under power a sub with a amp and cause the amp to clip it will destroy the voice coil. When a amp clipps it produces a square a wave which cause the sub to go forward and stay there until the wave goes to the negitve part of the waveform then it goes backwards and stays there and repeats the cycle. This cause increadible heat to be generated in the voice coil.
But you have to understand that when a sub has reached it max excurtion putting more power into it will not give you more output. The only way to get more output is move more air by increasing your subs.
Most of the guys I deal with at work want to buy big subs and spend as little as possible on the amp,What happens they come back with burnt voice coils.
Thats why I say it is better to have more power than not enough. You are more likly to wreck a sub with to little power than to much by clipping the amp all the time. But you have to use a little common sence. If a sub is rate for 200 watts rms and you try running a 1000 watt rms amp to it you will blow the sub up in no time. Now if you take a 1000watt rms sub and hook up a little 200 watt amp and are trying to get that sub to max output the amp will always be clipping and burn out the voice coil.

First off I don't see how you can underpower a sub... i mean applying less power than the sub can take just means your not pushing it to its fully potnetial. Underpowering does not cause clipping. And by the way the Kappa perfect RMS is around 300, but it can peak at 1400...however you would blow it running it at that high wattage. Also remember that most amps are over rated,,,and really don't put out as much power as they say...
