2000 Explorer XLT
Finally installed my JVC Kw-av61bt in my 2000. Also ran all wires to rear panel for amp and sub installation if the oem enclosure I bought ever gets here. I installed the same head unit in my car. liked it so much I bough the same model for the truck. It was 100 times less complicated and cheaper installing in the Explorer.
Oh and by the way if anyone was wandering red LED above the 4wd selector is hooked up to the brown wire via a 12v Zener diode so I can see exactly when the control track system activates/deactivates the TCC.

I like... That's what I need to do in our Mustang.

Hmm, that looks very nice in an Explorer. Almost stock.
How much was it?

Between $260 & 290 with built in Bluetooth.
Without bt around $220.

It's a very good unit.

Not bad. No Nav though, I guess.

Actually it does work in conjunction with the iPhone via app mode. Only up to 4s. (30 pin connector) MotionX will display map & take commands from the head unit. It works real well.

If you want a decent stereo with its own GPS, plan on spending a lot more.

I'm an Android user, can't stand iPhones. :P

But, yeah, I know, it's very expensive for a unit with standalone nav on it.
Craigslist and Kijiji have been no good to me either so far..

That install does look very professional. I've seen some head units that just don't 'fit' very well. Nice work!

Thanks. I took my time with it and managed to countersink it into the dash. All connections are soldered. Still got some work to do.
I just got the rear panel off and have a factory sub from a 98 on its way as well as a kicker dvc 8"
And the rear camera.

looks nice...that looks like the same metra kit I used for a dual DIN install, digital HU on top, with CB/WX underneath.

It is a Metra. Or at least half of one. I removed the din sleeve & faceplate trim and mounted the sides of the kit directly to the head unit.

Got the back up camera installed (my wife insisted)

And have all the parts for the sub. Factory enclosure from a 98, class D amp that actually fits on the enclosure and a Kicker 8" R-series sub. Problem I have is depth. The sub is about a 1/2" to tall to sit in the box. Gonna have to trim the bolt indentation in the box then seal the box back up or cut a shim.

I'll post pics when I get that sorted.

I think im going to get this exact same thing in my Explorer 1997'. Isn't it free install with some stores, if you buy the head unit there? I hope they can do it as professional as yours!

I don't know about the free install. I don't like "professionals". They have the advantage of knowing what to expect when installing in popular vehicles, but behind facade the wiring is done quickly with clamp splices and badly crimped connections. The head units them selves are typically stuffed in.
I prefer to take my time and not cut any corners. All connections are soldered and the dash properly prepared.

How much do you think it would cost to have someone install this Head Unit in my ford explorer? I just need a rough estimate..
Thanks!

Yes a 7" would fit. The JVC KW-AV 71 is the exact same size. Most any double dins would fit. I chose the smaller screen because it has a volume knob. Touch screens can be tricky to use in a moving vehicle.

I would think your probably gonna get charged 2-3 hours labor to have a unit with Bluetooth mic installed without back up camera or steering wheel controls. But each shop is different so call them for an idea.

Tip: most in dash video players have a "safety" feature that only allows video to be played when the parking break is on. Most people bypass this and some places even charge for a bypass adapter. All you have to do is run the wire that goes to the parking brake to ground. (A screw on the back of the stereo will work) if you buy a stereo and plan to have a shop install it, do this before you give it to them.

I would not recommend bypassing any safety features.

About 80 -100 including the parts. I love my Pioneer touchscreen. Will never go back to a regular head unit.

Bypassing the parking brake of a headunit is illegal in some states/provinces.
Be sure to check local laws before doing it.
However, as long as you're not watching it and it's for the passengers, usually it's ok. Just drive safely.
