I am doing a conversion, meshin an explorer and ranger and i need to know locations along wire harness of the green ground bolts in a 98 5.0 XLT with rear ent.

also if anyone has any insight, i cannot seem to get rear running lights to work. my haynes manual say brown wire is running lights, but im not getting any voltage; however i found a brown(possibly black)/red wire that gets power when headlight switch is on.

-98 explorer dash and wire harness

thanks

what year is your truck and the explorer donor stuff ? im not sure about the green ground bolts, should be holes where the bolts go, i can tell you, the ranger uses a brown wire for the rear running/license plate lamps (circuit # 14 pin #22 of the 201 connector) the explorer is purple with white, pin #76 circuit #109 of the explorer 212 connector, others have said it and i will echo them... BUY an EVTM it will save you hours of head scratching. i bought two for my project (one for the ranger and one for the donor) best $30 ive spent in a LONG time.

black/red wire sounds like it is a courtesy light circuit (#53 i believe)

ranger body is 96
electrical/motor/frame is 98 explorer

every schematic ive found has brown as the run lights on the explorer.
IDK wtf is wrong with it. I think i may be missing a plug up by the brake peddle. so im gonna spend the day in the local pullapart tomorrow and possibly strip a 98 5.0 x for is harness and label EVERYTHING!

as for the green bolts. they have holes on them for the ranger, but the locations are different from explorer and ford REQUIRES these bolts at certain places or u get a CEL/malfunction down the line.

circuit #109 is for the license plate lights, it should be purple with white on the explorer, from the large bulkhead connector (212) behind the left side of the dash. this circuit is spliced to the brown wire (circuit 14) in the fuel tank area of the frame harness for the running lights. circuit #14 (the brown wire) is spliced with the front lights and runs through the dash to one of the plugs on the lower RH side of the dash. a month ago i wanted nothing to do with an EVTM, last week i finished re-wiring my ranger cab with a 96 explorer harness, added the keyless entry, full power door harnesses, overhead console, power heated mirrors (with the integral courtesy lights) six way power seats, removed all air bag related circuits, (ABS is next) my truck is an 01 i originially inteded to re-wire the whole truck with wiring from a 96 ranger, then just plug the explorer engine wiring into the harness, then once i got the EVTM and started learning how to read it, i couldnt see any reason not to retain all the goodies from the explorer. BTW make sure the 98 harness you get doesnt have the PATS or make sure you get EVERYTHING related to the PATS system (which i will be removing from my 2000 ex in the near future) yes the green bolts are required, but they are merely grounds, as long as they are grounded the ECM has no way of knowing WHERE they are grounded, they just have to BE grounded. get the EVTMs for both trucks, the 96 ranger is about $10 on ebay the explorer is usually around $20 you will save yourself hours of headaches knowing what all the circuits do and where they are routed through the vehicle. do not just match wires, the 96 ranger wiring and the 96 explorer wiring has many matched colors, but they arent always the same function. or buy a few bags of marshmallows and some hot dogs

and by the way, the wiring schematics in the hayes and chiltons are GARBAGE compared to an EVTM specificly for your vehicle

what exactly does the PATS system do. if i have the original key and changed to the explorer steering column, what does it hurt?
I wasnt looking for location in relation to truck, but relation to harness, but i think i may have found them all. no CEL and it runs/drives fine.

will have to look into the EVTM, but i need to figure this out by friday morning. I have a big show this weekend tht the truck is in so hope i can find it..

i would like to see your setup, I wanna retain all the features of the ex also.

my ranger is an 01 originally i planned to re-wire it with 96 ranger wiring, then plug in the explorer engine wiring and it would have been done, but i wanted to use the explorer dash wiring cuz i want to keep the overhead console, the full length console, and the keyless entry, once i started trying to match the explorer dash harness with the ranger body harness, i found it was much easier to use all the explorer harness and just make it fit the ranger. which is where i am now, and im glad i did it like that. the explorer dash wiring is quite a bit different than the ranger wiring even with both being the same year, everyone said, get an EVTM finally i did and im DAMN glad i did. the PATS system involves the ECM, the keys (obviously) the ignition switch, the transponder ring around the switch, and the PATS module behind the pass side airbag, all of this MUST come from ONE vehicle in order to work, and the components can malfunction meaning it must be taken to a ford dealer for re-programming which is the reason i wanted to eliminate the PATS altogether. if you want to retain all the explorer goodies the EVTM is essential. ive retained everything and will be adding heated power mirrors which will be very useful when the snow falls. the wiring is is a job, but it sounds like you could handle it, regarding the running lights, are you using the explorer dash harness or the ranger dash harness ?

im using explorer harness and substructure with a ranger skin.
the only ranger electrical will be taillights.

Think i found my problem. there is about a 10 pin plug by the e brake socket that i dont know where it goes; yet it contains some light wires. any insight?

a picture of the plug may help ... and where and what is the e-brake socket ?

some plug on the back of the e brake. going to take a picture now. but after 3 hours at a local pullapart, i think its for the overhead console.

the single plug that is completely wrapped in loom goes to ebrake.

if its rectangle shaped, and black, and i believe the first plug south of the big grey square plug (212) it should be the plug for the OHC/visor harness. if you insist on using the brown wire for your rear running lights, look on the pass side of the dash, near the door plug, your brown wire (circuit #14) will be in one of the plugs behind the pass kick panel, it runs from the plug off the dash, under the carpet, and crosses over to the drivers side under the rear seat i believe, then on to the tail lights. i dont have room in my ranger for the 15 miles of wiring that was in the 96 explorer, so i condensed it all down to what was actually necessary which is why i opted to (as stated earlier) tie into the license plate light circuit for the rear running lights at the big grey plug (212) i see no problem with splicing them if using the explorer harness, the ranger harness doesnt have two separate circuits, or you could run a wire from the plug with the brown wire straight to the tail lights, i guess. but if you are still looking for the brown wire, thats were it is in the explorer harness

yeah that is the plug for the OHC/visor harness

i'll snap a few pics of my "home built" harness... after i get some tape on it, it fits better than i could have hoped for, considering all the stuff ive added, and it will be hidden behind all the plastic anyway, so im quite satisfied

here is the harness from the 212 connector along the drivers floor

here is where i decided to stash my RAP module, and yes i have full range of movement with the six way power seat track

here is a shot of the 212 connector as it will be when finally hooked to the dash..
