Ok ive asked this question about 4 times on here and never seem to get a reply on what the problem could possibly be.

The only thing that bothers me about my car is this...

When I am stationary... either in Drive or Reverse... (not park or neutral).. My car makes somewhat of a whining noise.. it really dosen't sound like the belt although i will not rule it out..

The only times this noise is present (sort of sounds like a hissing noise that cuts in and out..) is when I am NOT moving.. Once i hit the gas and start to drive the noise goes away completely.. like it just cuts off the hissing sound.

I can really hear the sound when I go though a drive-through to get some food or what not and the sound can echo off the wall. My car dosent have any other weird movements or anything.. it sits still well.. just I really would love to get rid of that noise..

Again it ONLY happens when im sitting still (It is NOT the brakes) cause it happens with feet off the brakes as well... it generally only does it in drive and reverse.. Tranny seems to be fine, shift fine, etc.. i'd have a hard time believing it would be the tranny.. it HAS to be something small and simple.. anyone else ever had this problem? i have the 1997 SOHC 4.0

I would vote for the belt tensioner pully. Or perhaps one of the other pullys. Alt. possible also.
You need a helper to put it in gear while you have the hood open & can isolate the noise.
Mechanics stethascope (sp?) would be helpful. Auto Zone may have one you can borrow.

I'm not familiar with 2nd generations, but I've heard of irritating whistles/hums coming from the IAC.

although it does not sound like it, it could possibly be an exhaust leak after the muffler.

i really appreciate all the replies... they all help to try and isolate the problem.. i dont think it's an exhaust leak because it happens only in drive or reverse.. so something has to be moving that's not moving while in park or neutral that causes the "air seeping" type of sound.
i was told a need a new belt and fuel filter.. im thinking the belt may have something to do with it but it honestly dosent sound like it's coming from the front of my car.. ive had the hood up and listened to the belt and it sounds fine.. it sounds like it's coming from under the car more towards the drivers side i guess.. really hard to figure out
