My mother has a 93 explorer that i bought for her.
I live in vegas and she lives in AZ.
She said it was running a little rough on her way to work and when she started it to go home she said it ran roughly for a few seconds and then would not re- start.
Her friend looked at it and went and bought a new feul pump and that is when she called me to drop the tank and replace it because her friend is too old to be doing that heavy of work.
I called my buddy and he met me at the her place of work. the engine turns over and nothing happens. we checked the fuel pump and it starts up and primes. we checked the release valve on the manifold and got a good spray.
We them turned it over and checked for spark and got nothing.
we took the pump back with the reciept and changed it for a new coil pack. still nothing.
we replaced the ignition switch under the steering column. still nothing.
i swapped the relays to check the eec and still nothing. all fuses are good.
I gave up for the day and made the 1 1/2hr trip again the next week with a new eec computer. wee installed it and still nothing. I consider myself a pretty good weekend mechanic but i am now drawing blanks.
We did find some wires to some fog lights that shorted out and burnt all the way from the solenoid to the switch on the dashboard. we removed them. My mother said that the truck would sometimes turn over by itself. we established that the faulty wires were arching from the positive post to the solenoid and were running under the battery. we checked all other wires and they were visibly ok. we did not check the crank sensor. i just checked the connection and it was fine. ny help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

..Off hand......I can not think of anything you haven't tried yet..

..Take a close look at the large relay fuses...But I'm thinking you might have blown a fusible link from your short description...

...Most of the fusible links can be found at the rear of a Haynes manual if you have one..

Did you check that the coil is getting power? If it is check the tan/yellow wire to make sure it pulses, if it doesn't, I would suspect the crank sensor.

I second the crank sensor. I'd also disconnect the battery and let it 'forget' what it had learned. It may have been getting false starting data or reading when the wires were arcing.

Thanks guys. I am heading down this afternoon . I have a list of things from you guys and researching the web./ i will say ten hail marries, cross my fingers and wish upon a star.
Thanks again. (there's always kerosene and a match)

Pull codes. See whats in there before you do anything else. Thats the beauty of self diagnostics.

My explorer did the same thing a few weeks ago. It would run find then it wouldn't then after a day of that it died in the drive way I was at a lot on it. I check the fuel presser form the release valve and got a good spray off it. I even replaced the coil pack and check to make sure it was getting fire. Then I pulled the fuel presser gauges turn out it was only pushing out 10psi. Form what i understand they need at lest 35 to 40 psi to run right. I would check the fuel presser and see what you get form that. Just my two cents.

does it sound like the crank rotates a couple times when trying to start then sticks or something? my car is also doing this chugging thing when in reverse and at slow speeds. I have a CEL I need checked. its not like i can do anything now because I'm broke!! figures. anyone live in the fort worth area?
