My cousin has XLT 4 dr. Explorer with just over 33K on it. I'm not quite sure of the year but I think its a 99 or 00 but it also has the SOHC motor in it. The check engine light is on and when I scanned it I recieved the codes PO171 and PO174, System lean, bank 1 and bank 2. I'm not sure if it iwas 170 or 171 but I know the code definition is system lean bank 1. What could be causing this ? Bad intake gasket?

Also on my truck, its a OHV 4.0 and a 00. When I'm going up hill and I turn off the overdrive, I get a slight vibration which I assume is a tranny shudder, its quick and last maybe a second but I know this isn't normal. I also get it once in a while when I upshift going up hill, just wondering what causes this and if theres anything I can do about it? I've also noticed that my tranny dipstick is pretty rusty, anyone find a solution to this short of buying a new one?

anyone??

On the SOHC motor the problem is most likely the intake manifold o-rings are leaking. The warranty is extended under program 00M12. May also want to check out progam 01M01 cause sooner or later the camshaft tensioners and timing chain cassettes will probably go too.

On your OHV, that just might be the torque converter. You can try putting a bottle of Lubegard? in. BUT, first off you better take care of the cause for the rusty dipstick. When was the last time the fluid was flushed/filter changed? Bad fluid will also cause your shudder.

Thanks for the tip, I'll meantion that to them, but first i'm gonna have them clean the MAF and change the fuel filter, can't hurt right?

As for mine, last week of december is the last time I've change the fluid. I used the "hick" method of lettting the tranny pump out a quart then refilling a quart, 6 quarts worth. The filter& fluid was done in the summer time, no more than 5K ago. Where abouts can I get lubeguard?

Should be able to get it at most autoparts outlets.

currently i'm getting these same error codes on my 97 OHV, i already cleaned a MAF that i got from the yard with 40k miles on it, compared to my 140k MAF, ran awesome for like 3 days, then back to crap ass gas milage, check engine light came back on with the same PO171 PO 174 codes, bank 2 running lean, we talked about the O2 sensors decided that prob isn't it, suggested that we change the fuel filter but i haven't had time,

know when u talk about the intake O-rings are we talking injectors or what???? i'm gonna try and do all new bosch +2 plugs and fuel filter this weekend if it will freaking warm up a lil bit, any more ideas can't hurt, i did have an aftermarket cold air intake but i put factory back on with a K&N drop in cone filter.

9 times out of ten it is your 02 sensors if you are getting the bank running lean codes.

if you have a scanner or, the place you got the codes from has one, you can watch the 02 sensor range to see if it is switching back and forth, or just staying still, or if it is slow at switching.

I'm leaning away from the 02 sensors right now due to the mileage of 33K and the known problems of this code on SOHC engines, right now I'm going with KISS, keep it simple stupid and then work into the more expensive fixes.

Intake o-rings don't apply to the OHV engine. The intake manifold gasket can leak on the OHV engines. Retorquing the bolts can sometims help as they tend to loosen over time and air can leak thru at the gasket.

I have to disagree with this, especially since you have both banks lean. The usual suspects for both banks lean are intake seals (especially on the SOHC), or a dirty MAF. Having O2 lean codes doesn't normally mean that the O2 is at fault, it normally means the engine is running lean.

l have a 2000 eddie v8 and my check engine light comes on and the codes read p0171, and p0174 also. so i clear them and every so often they come back on.

i have mac intake, superchips micro tuner, 75mm pro-m mass air and the 3 inch mac cat back exhaust.

i have noticed this every so often after i installed my mass air meter. i always run 93, or 92 octane, depends on where. i haven't pin pointed what causes this. any help?

I'm assuming that your truck is programmed for the 90+ octane? other wise its just a waste of money.

With the recalls concerning the SOHC engine, if you call a dealer with your VIN, can then tell you if you need/can get it performed?

Dealer should be able to tell you if the engine was eligible for the extended warranty based on the VIN #. They won't perform any work until they confirm the issue however.

It is funny that you guys are discussing the exact same problem when I am looking for the solution. I have a 2000 with OHV and 99K miles on it. First I changed the fuel filter and cleared the code. I got about two days and the light came back on.

Then (since I didn't have time for fixing it myself) I brought it to the dealer. They changed the Mass Air Flow Sensor. When the code came back a couple of days later they changed it again. I got my Explorer back two days ago and the Check engine light came back on this AM.... (I am sure it is the same code again...)

I am going to try what TPLYNCH suggested and retourquing the bolts on the intake manifold, and then I am going to change the plugs. (Just because it is time.) Thanks for the info!
