I've been looking at buying a car to save on gas, and I have found a eclipse GS-T that only has 87k on it. The problem is that about 6 months ago the head gasket was blown and the car has been sitting since. I'm kind of worried that some of the internals may have had the chance to start corroding since there is a chance that the oil has some coolant in it.

Would this be as simple as putting a new head gasket on there and changing the oil on shorter intervals right after its done, or would it need a whole engine rebuild to be reliable (replace possible corroded bearings)?

Get that oil out of there now
There is likely a bunch of water in the exhaust system as well, if possible get that out of there too!

It is very likely that the engine internals have been effected by the water in there yes, when this happens with an explorer I just replace the entire engine, because re-doing the heads and gaskets is a crap shoot, and with 4.0L's being $3-400 at the yards, its cheaper and easier too. But with a FWD eclipse? I know nothing about replacing one of those engines......

Well, after further research, it seems it will more than likely need the cylinders honed out, new rings, as well as the head gasket and making sure the head is still flat. Supposedly the bearings and other internals "should" be fine according to people from an eclipse/talon forum.
