what are you getting into that your LSD won't get you out of?

Lots of 2nd gen explorers have them. I've got a Powertrax No-slip in the rear of my sport, and use it as my daily driver.

I like mud! but to get to the muddin spot i go to you gotta go through a lot of uneven terrain. goin up on three wheels a lot. its an old build site for houses but they had to stop cuz it was wet lands. it gets real sticky at times!!:D

Nice! The LSD not holding up to the job?

I think I remember that someone had said that the Aussie Locker would fit this differential, but was looking further into it. I don't remember anymore info. Does any one have anymore on this?

I second, I saw that they only fit open rear ends as well. I would love to know if we can make these work in our trux...

You have to change the carrier to an open carrier. New $100, used $50. Once you have an open, you can install a locker. Say good bye to the LS carrier.

Easy test is to jack up the rear end, get both wheels off the ground, place trans in neutral, and spin one tire. If they spin in the same direction, you have a LS. If they spin in opposite directions, you have an open carrier.

The best way is to open it and look inside to make sure. If you have a blown clutch pack in a LS, it could spin like a open diff, so beware.

I thought that you could just look at the sticker in your door. Mine says D4 which I understand is a 3.73 LSD.

How capable are the LSD rear ends in these trucks? Do they have issues?

Well, mine blew up!..lol.! They do go out eventually, they either start to slip, (wear), burn up and die, or explode. It just depends on how hard they were driven.
The ford LS is nice when new, and if it is in good shape. BUT nothing compared to a locker! A locker will take you farther than a LS ever could! Lockers are the things wet dreams are made of boys!

Yes, your door tag will tell you what it came with from the factory. But, it could have been replaced by a previous owner, you never know. There is a alum tag on the diff cover as well, it will say what it is also, BUT, I don't trust that either. It could have been from the old rear end if someone swapped it out. I know this seems a little paranoid, but when your talking about spending hundreds of dollars, it is not hard to open a diff and have a peek to make sure.

Agreed, I will have a peek when I have it on the lift installing the RB spacers. How does yours do on the street? This truck is on road more than it is off.

The powertrax lockrite locker is made for everyday driving. It does great on the street. You just have to adjust your driving style a bit. You will lose the ability to power through turns fast. It works when you apply power. so you have to ease around a turn, say at a stop light turning left. If you gun it, you will prolly not make your turn, it will push the front end, instead of allowing it to turn. Example: Making a U-turn with gas applied=3 lanes to complete. Turning while coasting=2 lanes.

Nice to know, I am going to do some more looking into this.

I had a Ford mechanic class when i was in collage, and i was looking up tsb on the ford dealer's shop web site. I remember seeing something about the lsd's wear out early or just failing completely for no real reason. i think that's what happened to mine.

So pretty much take corners like I was always taught you should. Start wide while braking, cut in tight, and then punch the gas at the apex, swinging out wide at the exit. Of course, it's a whole lot safer to do when there's no other cars on the road, lol...

What about a Powertrax Traction System? It seems smoother on road, but still locks when you need it off road....
