Power Windows and 4x4 lights

Ok on my 1996 explorer 4x4 ,4.0, 4 door, when the car is started the 4x4 and 4x4 low lights flash and the windows won't go down. then after a while of driving it the windows will go down. Everybody i've talked to doesn't know what it is. Can anybody help me out??

Not sure about the windows, but they are controlled by something, I think it's the PCM? Whatever it is, it is what allows you to operate your windows after you take the key out (but only before the door is opened). This equipment also allows you to operate your power seats when the key is out if you have them, so maybe check to see if your seats operate as well.
As for the 4X4 lights, does this happen when you start the truck, and do they actually flash or do they come on and the go away after you start the truck? If they just come on and go away after starting, this is normal, it's like a self-test, just like the ABS light & airbag lights. If the lights are flashing, usually that indicates an engagement problem. Are you in any 4X4 mode when they flash? I have had trouble sometimes when attempting to go from 4X4 Auto to 4lo. Sometimes 4lo won't engage, and then I get the flashing 4X4 lights.
One thing you may want to try is disconnecting your battery for 15-30 minutes, which will reset your computer. Reconnect the battery and take 'er for a drive!

That is really strange...mine does exactly the same thing. Not all the time, just everyonce in a while though. And only the passenger side window has problems and my 4x4 lights flash on occasion also, but I think it is only when I try using 4auto, it will flash and go off... But after a while it will begin to work again. She is just moody sometimes. So I am interested to hear what everyone else has to say.

It could be the GEM (general electronics module). That controls 4x4 and all things electrical in your Explorer. Another possibility is a bad fuse... recall someone had problem with windows and 4x4 and it turned out to be a bad fuse. #12 is the number that is floating in my head, but don't quote me on that.....
