Well my kit finally arrived and I plan on the start of the install as early as this weekend, but I am having some confusion.
At first I learned that the 99 had a returnless fuel system and no fuel mods had to be done. Powerdyne stated that the FMU must be installed even though it is sort of returnless so I consulted a person who know Fords and this is what they said..

"They are correct that your fuel system is not really returnless. It has a pressure regulator back on the frame rail with a real return line. That is where the FMU belongs and you should install it."

now I am really confused.

Comments? TIA

Yes there is a pressure regulator, but it is in the tank as part of the fuel pump.

Jefe is correct, the explorer returnless system has the regulator in the tank. Some other for vehicles had a regulator on the frame rail, but not explorer. For my 1999 Ranger, I ended up running a true return line from the rails, with a remote mounted AFPR. Nothing that can't be accomplished in an afternoon.

I thought 98 was the first year of the returnless system?? I got a motor out of a 2000 and the FPR was on the fuel rail, however, the rail was plugged where the return line would have been.

rangerpowersports.com in the tech article section look for the superchager install on the 4.0 .... it shows the modification needed to do for the fmu on the returnless fuel systems

On the returnless system it has something that looks like an FPR. . its actually just a pulse modulator(?). I have yet to figure out when exactly Ford changed over.

Ford probably changed over to save $0.52 per unit.

$0.52 per unit is actually quite a savings. I bet you is was more like $2-3 per unit.

The returnless system change happened in 1999. 1998 was the last year for return on the Explorer.

Got the kit in my hands today, it comes with a FMU and inline pump, I am going to go with it just as the instructions tell me to do. I figure this kit was specifically designed to work as it comes in the box, why mess with the engineering that went into it?

All I need to do know is find some idle time
