Preferred Gear Manufacturer?

  • Richmond Gear - Made in USA
  • US Gear - Made in USA
  • Yukon Gear - Made by US Gear
  • Ford Racing - some made by US Gear in USA (one source stated this anyway), some made by Visteon (USA), some made by Motive Gear (part# ending in A = Visteon known to be quiet, part# ending in M = Motive, known to be noisy, info found on Mustang forum)
  • Motive Gear - all over the place. Italy, South Korea, India
  • Strange Engineering - made by Motive Gear (see above) (note: maybe not, US Gear website states they make Strange Gears, bottom of page )
  • Superior Axle & Gear - they use USA & Europe forgings (not sure exactly what that means), made by Foote Axle & Forge LLC
  • Precision Gear - Made in USA (? not sure, couldn't find much)
  • Alloy USA - made by Precision Gear
  • Visteon - made in USA, originally Ford's main manufacturer for their R&P's
  • Moser Engineering - made in USA
  • Genuine Gear - couldn't find manufacturer location (post on Pirate4x4 states Genuine Gear is made by Foote Axle & Forge LLC)
  • G2 Axle & Gear - part of Genuine Gear
  • USA Standard - could not find manufacture location
  • Nitro Gear - could not find manufacture location

This is a nice list. Thanks for doing the leg work. As far as Genuine Gear is concerned, I contacted them in the past and they said their R&Ps are made by American Axle Manufacturing and the region/country of production can vary from Asia, Mexico, and even the US. The G2 Axle brand is sort of a part of Genuine Gear, but more accurately Genuine Gear is being phased out and replaced by G2. G2 R&P will still be made by American Axle, but produced solely in a new facility in Korea. They couldn't name any specific brands for me, but did say there are a few "big name" brands whose parts will also come from the same facility in Korea and supposedly this facility also produces many OE parts for Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and GM. I know that doesn't prove anything, but it kind of reinforces what several members have said about many of the different brands all coming from the same place and in many circumstances the higher price of some gears is for the brand name and packaging.

If a site does not list something, that does not necessarily mean they don't have, or cant get the part your after. An E-mail to a rep can get results and answers. This was my case in getting my gears. I even got additional savings by working one on one with the rep. 2 weeks after my purchase, I got an E-mail from that same rep, telling me they found another savings and refunded some of my cash back onto the credit card. Now that's a customer relationship that has won me over and I will continue my purchases with them.

Was this from my4by.com? I ordered a locker from them and something went heywire with the shipping. It got lost or there was some mixup getting it out the door. It was no big deal to me I wssn't in a hurry to get it, but a couple days later a $20 dollar credit showed up on my statement. They refunded my shipping charge as a way to say sorry for mishandling the order. I didn't ask them for a refund nor did I expect one. They just did it. That's impressive service.

this list I made was by searching... some of the info is old, and no longer accurate.
So, I went ahead and emailed multiple companies.
my previous posts shows the emails I have actually received from some of the companies I emailed, and are more accurate.

While I would prefer to purchase a product made domestically here in the USA, it seems Yukon Gear is a more highly preferred manufacturer for gears, even though theirs are made internationally.
Superior was 2nd, which also has their manufacture locations internationally, rather than domestically.

although I don't know how often any of the domestically-made gears were used (although there are few, US Gear and Richmond being the only ones so far replied as being manufactured domestically).

on a side note... I can't get a DUI for web-wheeling under the influence, right? :burnout:

Yes, it was from my4by.com they have bent over backwards to help on a few purchases I have made with them. They are as personal as one could get for an online source. They actually did the legwork and forwarded their E-mails to me on where the US Gears were made at. I also asked if they could get me my shipment by a certain date. They got it to me earlier than I asked for. I cant say enough good things about this company.

Gavin you might want to give these guys a try. You wont be sorry, they will make sure your satisfied with the entire purchase transaction.

I had the rear Ring gear lose teeth, Ford Racing 4.10 8.8
the precision gears up front broke teeth

both diffs and lockers setup by the same shop at the same time, both had to be re-done after two very short wheeling seasons, so it may not be the gears fault, but I figured I would share...

after that I went Yukon in my rig and the wifes... no issues at all

not to threadjack.. but you live in Denver right? did you install your gears yourself... if not, where would you recommend around here to get em done? PM me if you want, or I'll just PM you, lol...
end threadjack. sorry!

wow... cheapest by a long shot....

about $100 cheaper than just about everywhere else.

allphaseoffroad.com

anybody heard of 'em?
doing some searching... can't find much, except they are apparently an authorized dealer for Total Chaos. A couple mentions at myfjcruiser.org.
Authorized dealer for Reid Racing products...

sounds like they should be a reputable company!?

410 you're in Colorado, right? They're located in Longmont. Heard of 'em?

as for allphase, i see some of their rigs/stickers on trucks around town. not sure if i've head anything about them, but i'm going to contact them soon about doing my gear install for me (i live in boulder, right south of longmont). another local place quoted me a CRAZY amount over email. something like 1000 bux per axle :thumbdwn: probably cuz i'm a girl. but i'll let you know how they are after I talk to them!

410 said he's done business with 'em before, and they're good people.
So most likely that's where I'll be ordering my rear gears, atleast. They have no D35 gears listed, and haven't gotten an email back yet.

$1000 is expensive, but can't say it's an unusual price really. The only main shop up here wants around $1k per axle also, which is why I'm going to be doing it myself.
But it also helps that I have spare front and rear axle housings sitting in my garage.

this is where i got my yukons at,they where reasonable priced and they carry alot of gear for the d35.im happy with them and they shipped fast too so cant complain.o and a $1000 for an 8.8 is insane,my friend does gears for a $100 but is teaching me how too,d35 setup might be a different story.

I just got a much better quote, with a lockrite locker installed for way cheaper than 1000 an axle. I'm much happier about that! But, the labor per axle looks to be about 500 bux. It would be nice to have spares to take in... might have to look into that.
