I'm about to change oil (myself) in my recently purchased 2000 Mountaineer. To date it has been changed with Motorcraft oil at the Ford dealership. Being one who likes to stay with one brand of oil in my vehicles I'd like to continue the same with this vehicle. But, at $2.25/qt. that gives me pause, especially, since I've been paying around $1.00/qt. for Valvoline and Pennzoil which my other 3 vehicles use.
So, does anyone know who manufactures/refines the Motorcraft oil that Ford supplies? In the absence of that information do any of you have a recommended brand of oil for my V-6? Any info is appreciated and thanks in advance.

Any major brand name oil of the recomended weight will be fine. Most oil today is refined under the exact same processes (several in the same plants). Motorcraft oil is no better than Valvoline, Quaker State, Penzoil, etc... it just costs more because you are paying for the name. In reality the brand of oil you use isn't as critical as is the brand of oil filter. Stay away from anything sold at Wal-Mart (even the Fram filters sold there are different than the ones sold by an auto parts store). I recomend using either a Motorcraft or a Wix filter.

I buy my Motorcraft FL-1A filters at Walmart for $2.77 each.

Made in the good ol' USA & the same ones that are $6.50 at my Ford dealership..

The oil packaged and labeled for the manufacturers is blended and bottled to spec by whoever gives them the best price. So there is really no way to know unless you know someone who works for the manufacturer.

I recommend using AMSOIL motor oil and filters. Better fuel mileage, improved performance and longer component life. Yes, it is a little "pricey" but it is a better value in the long term.

Thanks Mike, Doug and Agexplorer. Your information is very useful. Now, all I have to do is decide whether to go to synthetic with a 7500 mile change interval or dino with the 3000 mile change interval.

Just as an aside, there are a couple sites which are listed below that analyze motor oil and compare various brands. Been studying these reports and it seems that Chevron Supreme has a slight edge over the others as far as dino oil is concerned.

Hope that last address works. If not, let me know.

Thanks, James. Couldn't figure out why it didn't post the entire address. Guess there must be some abbreviating capability.

Mike Boyle, how are the filters sold at the paved acreage of Wal-Mart different than what I could buy at Checker or AutoZone?

Fram isnt good no matter where you buy it. But they are all the same
look at the part number its the same everywhere
