Cars been running just fine, (98 ex) then tonight on way home, i called at shop, parked up , when i came out i backed up and the car kinda acted like i had a cone stuck underneath, it was not wanting to go backwards, or rather i could feel resistance, thinking somehow i had run over a cone ( i hadn't), i then drove forward, and for a yard or so i had the same effect, again similar to when ya have a traffic cone stuck underneath(not that i run over em regularly), and then i heard what i can only describe as something between a dull thud and a dull crack, and it moved forwards fine, so i drove off, all the while listening for anything untoward, but neither heard , nor felt anything and car was fine again, then i stopped about 6 miles further on at the chippie, and to save backing out into traffic, i backed into the car space, and once again the car felt like it had resistance in going backwards, handbrake wasnt on, brakes arnt sticking as far as im aware, so anyone any ideas??
cheers...Dave

just a thought!, have you been driving on a dry pavement with 4x4 hi/low and not auto mode selected as this could give you wind up pressure, sort of the symptons your describing and the bang could be the release of pressure on the drive shafts.its all i can think it could be ,hows transmission fluid levels?

Nope, havn't had it in anything but auto mode , tho i was doing a bit of reversing and weaving ( backing up a trailer several hours before it happened). not a big heavy trailer, just a lightweight caravan chassis

sounds like it could possibly be a problem with the brakes, maybe handbrake.

There may be something that has come adrift, as you reverse it catches/binds which is the resistance you are feeling, then as you drive forward the clunk is the brakes releasing themselves and all ok until you reverse again.

Had a similar problem many moons ago with a Mk1 Capri when one of the return springs came off the shoe.
