OK, so I pulled what I believe to be an M5OD transmission from the junkyard on sunday from a 91 x 4x4 for my 91 x auto 4x4 (already all converted with a bronco tranny underneath, wow I cooked out there from 9 to 4, that was a painful pull. I already bought a new seal for the front of the tranny, it was a little wet by it but dont know if its from the slave line I pulled out or not. I honestly could not tell if it was leaking from the seal or not but I will feel better replacing it. anything else I need to do? The tail end for my T-Case looks fine, dry and no wobble. The front shaft for the clutch though feels a bit wobbly to me. Even NAPA told me its fine, but it worries me. A bearing I could replace? Also the shifter feels fine, im able to spin the input and get output on all gears by hand. No difficulty on that so that so I hope its good. I also have to find a kit for the shifter because I can lift the shifter ball up and down about 1/4" to 3/8", so pretty worn there, could just been hard shifting by the driver? to bust that up? I'm keeping the flywheel and getting it resurfaced as its different from the bronco one underneath (bigger around). Getting a new slave and NAPA says the friction plate and pressure plate look new and they are very shiny and meaty. But my worry is when you go to bolt the clutch together, you only have about at most a 1/4" gap if lucky before the pressure starts. Seems like a little bit to me but im used to small import cars, and I have noticed that driving the explorer it seems to have a very short throw on the engage and disengage of the clutch. So Please Any And All Advice Will Be Aprreciated and once Im done with this swap, I hope you guys are stilling the vinyl cuz those are awesome! (By the way when this thing was my dad's, he is the one that did the swap to a bronco 5 speed. its about as rigged as it gets and thats why when I got it with a bad slave I decided to do it right).

I pulled a used tranny from a X the input shaft had a little wobble also. I'm pretty sure it's just how they are. G'luck man!

My input shaft didn't wobble at all after I rebuilt my tranny.

Look at my rebuild thread, the part about taking the measurements for the shims. I'd bet yours is out of spec and that's what allows the wobble.

how much wobble?

How much did yours wobble NITRO71 ??? and how long did you get out of that tranny? im doing a new front seal on tranny and a rear main seal on the engine. my wobble is about , well at the tip of the shaft about a 2/8" wobble well under 1/4" actually more like 1/8" to be more precise. i only have to get about a year out of it at best because im saving up for a new motor from ford and a rebuild or something on the tranny to put back in with it.

Ah Ha !!!

Thanks so much KPT!!! I believe you are right! I pulled the front off the tranny since I have to replace the front seal anyway from the wobble. I was afraid it was gonna go out fast from the wobble but you were right, If I hold down what I believe to be the bearing race, there is no wobble. So now I have to find a shim but dont know where to. I called our local tranny shop today and they send sticks to LA for rebuilds so they dont carry parts. Any idea where I can get a shim at assuming I figure out how to measure what I need, (havent looked at your thread yet but will after this post). Guys thank you so much for your help, Im a new family with a almost 2 year old daughter and we both work so this is a big help. I promise after I will join monetarily as soon as I can take a break from spending money on this thing. My boss os already loaning me 2-3 hundred to do this, very easy terms, great guy also. so thank you thank you thank you. I was so afraid I bought a bunk tranny! and I did not want to pay $50 extra just to swap it at the junkyard if it was bad. and then the oil stunk burned but it was just like the smell from the bolt holes.

Any good tranny shop should be able to get you the shim kit (pic from my rebuild thread):

Or you can figure out what you need before and get it from the dealer. Almost certainly more expensive but here are part numbers if you decide to go that way:

Question:

Do you think I could take my tranny to the machine shop that does all my machining and they would be able to measure what shim I need? I just dont have any measuring devices or xtra $ for that stuff right now. And one more question, It looks like the bearing race spins also with the bearing or could spin? or is the shim measurement supposed to hold it in place from spinning? And oh, there is also like an inner rubber seal type thing, need replacing? or jsut more of a pressure/splash guard? from my opinion. There is already a shim in there and it is a little bit worn, and under the shim and inner seal thing was some chunks of RTV, maybe messing with flow of ATF and wore down the shim?

Oh sorry one more question,

i broke a sensor or switch when i pulled the tranny, its the 2 wire one on the top right side when looking from the back i believe, and maybe you could point me to info to what the other one is so i can figure out how to wire those up to my automatic tranny harness? or is it true i should be able to disconnect the manual harness from the donor and plug it into my harness in place of the automatic tranny harness?

I believe the sensor you are talking about is for reverse lights. There should be two electrical connections on top of the tranny - one for reverse lights the other for the Neutral Safety Switch.

Just saw a M50D come off a 91 Ranger today. Had the input shaft wobble going on also. It seems pretty common. They must get outa spec pretty easily.
