First, I ask this without having actually taken my rotors off yet to check, because I have not been in a position where I could go a day or two without my 'Sploder.

In lieu of having my already thin rotors machined down, I decided to just bite the bullet and order new rotors all together. I ordered Powerstop from Summit, part #PWR-AR-8554L. I ordered them online by entering my Explorer model year, then selecting the rotors that came up. They were delivered today, and I noticed that the rotors I got, which are the same part # as on the site, look like they just mount directly to a mounting flange and do not themselves carry the wheel bearings and races, as I was expecting. There is no way these are designed to carry the bearings and races, the inside diameter of the flange area has way too big a diameter. The application section at Summit says these rotors fit '91-'00 4WD applicationg, but I think the site is wrong because I think they went to a true IFS in '95, and mine is definitely a TTB.

I just want to get anyone's thoughts before I send these back or get my rig pulled apart.

yep, you were sent the wrong ones. The CORRECT rotors should have the hub, races, ABS ring, and of course the disc....not JUST the disc.

As you already know the PWR-AR-8554L (below) are the wrong rotors for a 1st gen. Time to call summit up and get them returned.

Okay, thanks guys. I am not even sure they make rotors for my application. The manufacturers' site is pathetic and has no application guide, and the only two application lists I have found do not show one for my '94. I guess I'll have to swap them for the Powerslot type instead.

I would assume(key word here...) that you would need the same rotors as would be found on a 91, correct? This being the case, I know that autozone carries the stock replacement rotors, if that helps any(doesn't have any extra holes, grooves, or vents, aside from the normal vents in the middle)

Check rockauto i think it is part #66416 4wd w ABS . I used part BD125713 for my '93.
Also you probably need the innerbearing seal, that can be hard to transfer from old rotor to the new one without damage it. I replaced all bearings, pads and ujoints, and balljoints at the same time I replaced the rotors...
Rotor price is about $60

Yikes, the same brand and style rotor, but the correct part number is almost twice the cost! $131 vs $73. AND Summit wanted me to pay the shipping backe even though they had the wrong part number listed for my application, but I eventually got the guy to agree to refund the shipping. (No slam on Summit, who I really like, but it honestly is not my fault if I order by vehicle type and the part they have listed for it is wrong.) Anyway, time to shop around and see if I can find a better price. Pepboys seems to have some similar styles, I'll go check them out today.

Boughtt the Raybestos Pro grade rotors from Pepboys and got them on today, along with the EBC Greenstuff pads. Things go a lot faster when you don't have to run back and forth to the machine shop to get the rotors turned. I am glad I went ahead and bought new rotors instead of trying to get them machined down, because the grooves worn into the back of the passenger side by the pad rivets were much deeper than I thought and easily would have taken the rotor below minimuns. Still need to flush out the brake fluid, it is very black, but they is tomorrow's project after football (maybe even during, depending on how my Broncos play). I can't wait to try my new Powerbleeder on that and my clutch, which I think still has a bubble in the line somewhere.

Thanks for all the replies.

I fully compress the caliper with the Bleeder open to totally (almost) push out the old fluid, tighten Bleeder. Then I suck out the reservoir and add fresh. This leaves you with only dirty in the Master and brake lines. Much faster since most of the old fluid is out and you didn't even get air in the system.

Just my 2 cents

I have not seen anyone that offers slotted or drilled rotors for a first gen 4x4.

Explorer Express does, or at least they used to. They carry the slotted ones.

Powerslot and Powerstop both offer rotors for first gen's. Summit was backordered on both models, but Truckperformance has the Powerslots. I also found a place called www.raceshopper.com that offers them as slotted or crossdrilled and slotted for the '94 Ex (the only model I asked about). They don't have the corssdrilled only or the diamond slotted for them.

we just put some on the durango from a company called ssbc stainless steel brake corporaton... they are nice

A year ago explorerexpress had had onsale price on the powerslot for the 1st gen rotors... If I recall it was $109 instead of the acutal $279. I did not respond fast enough and the bargain was gone. I do really regret that now. I bought OEM's instead some months after the onsale....;(

ART also makes a set of slotted rotors for a first gen X. I now have 140k miles or so on a set of rotors I got from them 5 years or so ago..

Here is their site..

I believe that the rotors Explorer Express sells are indeed the ART Slotted rotors you mention...

I knew explorer explress sold powerslot.. I didn't know they also sold ART.. ART is different than powerslot (but they kinda look the same).

Hm they may be Powerslots, I can't remember. Yeah now that you mention it I think that's right. Where were the ART's sold?
